A motor brake apparatus includes an improved torque adjustment mechanism. The adjustment mechanism includes an adjusting nut having a outer ring groove aligned with an inner ring groove defined in a receiving bore of the brake housing structure. A snap ring is located in the aligned grooves to connect the housing structure and adjusting ring while allowing free rotation therebetween. Inner threads of the adjusting nut engage outer threads of a spring pushing element such that rotation of the adjusting nut causes axial movement of the pushing element. The pushing element engages one or more springs which are thereby compressed or released, depending on which axial direction the pushing element is moved. The spring force varied in this manner results in varying levels of braking torque.

This caliper disc brake is normally held in its engaged position by springs and is released by a solenoid which acts through a lever assembly to activate the plunger of a hydraulic master cylinder unit which directs a measured volume of hydraulic fluid into a brake cylinder during each stroke to release the brake and provide a predetermined brake clearance. Brake wear results in a gradually diminishing volume of fluid within the brake cylinder with the excess fluid displaced therefrom flowing into a reservoir of the master cylinder prior to directing the measured volume of hydraulic fluid into the brake cylinder during the next brake releasing stroke. The cross sectional area of the master cylinder plunger and the brake piston are designed to provide a substantial mechanical advantage, and the lever assembly is fulcrum to provide an additional mechanical advantage thus requiring a much smaller than average power means for releasing the brake.

The body includes a housing shell (82) having a plurality of magnetically permeable segments (84, 86, 88) breaking up eddy currents and enabling faster brake response. An air gap adjustment mechanism (180) is adjustable to vary the axial distance from the pressure plate to the pole face to take up and compensate friction disc wear and maintain the air gap within a given tolerance as the friction disc wears with use. A torque adjustment mechanism (250) is adjustable to vary the bias of the biasing members biasing the armature away from the pole face, to vary braking torque. A release mechanism (310) includes pivot-bases (316, 318) with radially inwardly extending tabs (320, 322) for engaging and pushing the armature toward the pole face and against the bias of the biasing members, for manual release of the brake.

Thus, if the conveyor is lightly or heavily loaded with passengers, the emergency brake force will be automatically proportionally decreased or increased so that, in the event of an emergency stop condition, the braking force applied to the drive sprocket axle will be sufficient to stop movement of the conveyor within the predetermined time period that is preprogrammed into the conveyor controller.

The present brake device, primarily designed for intermittently rotating shafts, includes a pair of stationary pressure brake plates located on respective sides of a hub member fixed to the shaft. The pressure brake plates are anchored by link elements one of which is disposed at right angles to the remaining link elements to secure a non-rotatable but stable mounting of the brake plates. The hub member carries a plurality of replaceable friction brake inserts and the pressure brake plates are resiliently clamped into friction contact with the hub member which is located therebetween by a plurality of bolt and coil spring combinations carried in turn by one of the brake plates and by a face plate adapted to have contact with the other brake plate. By means of an adjusting nut the clamping pressure of the bolt and coil spring combinations can be adjusted.

Hydraulic fluid pressure disengages the torque transmission and loss of hydraulic pressure enables springs in the spring housing to move the pressure plate to engage the friction discs for torque transmission. Radially removable spacers permit the spring housing position on mounting studs to be adjusted for compensating for friction disc wear. The hydraulic cylinders each have a drain port communicating with an annular collector groove in the cylinder bore. The drain ports are interconnected through flexible conduits connected to a master drain port in the cylinder housing.
