    Abstract: A torque transmitting device for an automotive transmission includes a clutch housing with a plurality of internal splines, a clutch hub with a plurality of external splines extending radially outwardly from the clutch hub, a plurality of friction plates with internal teeth and a first and a second surface. The first and second surface having a friction material disposed thereon and at least one of the internal teeth has an aperture and the plurality of internal teeth intermesh with the plurality of external splines on the outer surface of the clutch hub, a plurality of reaction plates having a plurality of external teeth and a first and a second surface. The plurality of external teeth intermesh with the plurality of internal splines in the clutch housing, and a spacer member disposed in the aperture separates a first of the friction plates from a second of the friction plates.

    Abstract: A clutch plate includes first and second axially offset annular surfaces, a first angled surface extending at an acute angle from the first annular surface in a first axial direction, and a second angled surface extending at an acute angle from the first annular surface in a second axial direction, opposite the first axial direction. In some example embodiments, the clutch plate has a wet friction material fixed to the first and second annular surfaces and at least one of the first and second angled surfaces. In an example aspect, the clutch plate has a low friction wet friction material fixed to the wet friction material of the at least one of the first and second angled surfaces. The low friction wet friction material may be fixed to the wet friction material by infusion or bonding. In an example embodiment, the clutch plate has a first wet friction material fixed to the first and second annular surfaces, and a second, low friction wet friction material fixed to at least one of the first and second angled surfaces.

    Abstract: A clutch assembly includes a fluid-actuated piston that allows clutch usage in both high pressure and low pressure applications. The configuration of the clutch assembly is usable with both hydraulic and pneumatic pressure actuation. Seal configurations create differently sized internal piston surface areas against which inlet pressure applied at hydraulic or pneumatic fluid inlet ports act to move the piston. The utilization of differently sized piston surface areas allows the piston to apply essentially the same clutch engaging compression force in both high pressure hydraulic actuation and lower pressure pneumatic actuation applications.

    Abstract: A clutch assembly includes a fluid-actuated piston that allows clutch usage in both high pressure and low pressure applications. The configuration of the clutch assembly allows the piston to be used with different seal arrangements. These different seal configurations create differently sized piston surface areas against which the inlet pressure will act to drive the piston. The ability to change the size of the affected piston surface areas allows for the piston to receive essentially the same driving force under both high pressure and low pressure applications. Thus, the clutch assembly enables use of high hydraulic pressure (e.g., 320 psi) in combination with a seal arrangement that creates a small piston-driving surface area, and also use of low pneumatic pressure (e.g., 120 psi) with a seal arrangement that creates a large piston-driving surface area.
