摘要: A monobloc piston assembly for an internal combustion engine is provided. The piston assembly includes a piston body which extends along an axis and is formed of at least two pieces of material which are joined together at least one friction weld joint which extends continuously through an annular shape around the axis. One of the pieces has an upper surface with a combustion bowl having a rotationally asymmetrical shape around the axis formed therein. Another of the pieces has a dome-shaped receiving surface which is rotationally symmetrical around the axis for slidingly receiving a portion of a connecting rod.

摘要: A piston includes an upper member having a crown and a combustion surface extending radially inward from the crown. The upper member includes concentrically oriented first and second upper connecting surfaces integrally formed on the bottom side of the upper member. At least one of the upper connecting surfaces includes a curvilinear and/or multi-arcuate cross-sectional profile. The piston also includes a lower member having a pair of opposing skirts, each skirt defining a bore. The lower member also includes concentrically oriented first and second lower connecting surfaces integrally formed on a top side of the lower member. The lower member is integrally connected to the upper member by friction welding. The curvilinear and/or multi-arcuate profile enables a shortened distance between the top surface of the crown and the bore centerline of the bore. Methods of manufacturing the piston are also disclosed.

摘要: A piston and method of construction thereof are provided. The piston includes an upper crown having an upper combustion surface and a lower crown depending therefrom. The lower crown includes a pair of laterally spaced, axially aligned pin bores configured for receipt of a wrist pin. A substantially closed, annular outer cooling gallery is formed between the upper and lower crowns, wherein a bottom surface of the cooling gallery is formed by a floor of the lower crown. An oil inlet and an oil outlet extend through the floor. The oil inlet includes an upstanding toroid-shaped protrusion that extends upwardly from the floor into the cooling gallery, wherein the protrusion is formed as a monolithic extrusion from the material of the lower crown floor.

The skirt piece is formed of a lower temperature-capable steel such as a low alloy steel, and the crown piece is formed of a higher temperature-capable steel having a martensitic microstructure and containing about 10% wt. or greater of chromium. Related methodology for making a piston is also disclosed.

摘要: A hybrid induction welded piston including an upper piston part welded to a lower piston part is provided. The piston is produced by induction heating the upper piston part and the lower piston part, and bringing the parts together to a part growth compensated position. The method then includes rotating the upper piston part 17 to 34 degrees clockwise and then 17 to 34 degrees counterclockwise. In addition to controlling the axial position and degree of rotation, the force applied to the piston parts is controlled so that preferably no flash is formed in a narrow cooling chamber of the piston. During the rotating steps, the pressure gradually increases to a maximum level which occurs while the upper piston part is rotating in the second direction. The piston includes a homogenous metallurgical bond across the weld and no indentation on the outer surface at the weld prior to machining.

The pre-finished piston assembly may further include an upper part having a radially outer bowl surface meeting the radially inner bowl surface at a radially inner joint. The upper part may include a radially inner wall defining a radially inner upper part mating surface. The radially inner wall may define a radially inwardly facing surface that defines a non-parallel angle with the radially inner bowl surface where the radially inner bowl surface meets the radially innermost edge of the radially inner mating surface.

摘要: A steel piston with an oil gallery, and process for forming a steel piston oil gallery channel, which corresponds to the complex shape of the combustion bowl in the piston crown. The oil gallery channel is first forged to the basic shape that corresponds to the shape of the walls of the combustion bowl. Machine-turning surfaces in the oil gallery channel can be machine-finished as desired. Surfaces in the oil gallery which cannot be machined with conventional turning operations, such as recesses and protrusions into the channel, are left in the original forged condition.

摘要: A piston with a cooling gallery containing an open cell radiator is provided. The radiator has a large thermally conductive surface area that acts as a heat-sink to remove heat from the piston. Heat from the piston is transmitted from the radiator to cooling oil that enters the cooling gallery via an oil inlet formed in a floor of the cooling gallery and exits the cooling gallery via an oil outlet. The piston comprises a piston body including an upper part presenting an upper combustion surface and an undercrown surface. A ring belt depends from the upper combustion surface, and the cooling gallery extends around the piston body beneath the undercrown surface radially inwardly of the ring belt. The radiator includes a plurality of fins extending annularly around the cooling gallery. The fins of the radiator are spaced from one another by gaps extending annularly around the cooling gallery.

An exemplary piston may include a crown defining a combustion bowl and a ring land extending circumferentially around the combustion bowl. Exemplary pistons may further include a skirt supporting the crown. The skirt may include a pair of pin bosses defining a pin bore configured to receive a piston pin, and two opposing skirt supports defining surfaces configured to slide along a cylinder bore surface. The skirt supports each define a different radial stiffness.
