    Abstract: A method and apparatus for joining using friction and current, wherein the friction/current joining apparatus includes a friction device, a forging device, an electrical current source, and a programmable controller, as well as workpiece holders for the workpieces to be joined. The friction/current joining apparatus is controlled such that, in a contacting phase, the workpieces are initially moved along a process axis, and their mutually facing joining surfaces oriented transverse to a common process axis are brought into contact. In a grinding phase, while subjected to contact pressure by mutual relative movement, the joining surfaces, are ground together and made smooth. At the end of the grinding phase, the relative frictional movement is permanently stopped and, in a forging phase following the grinding phase, the workpieces are pressed together, plasticized, and joined while subjected to contact pressure on their contacting joining surfaces along the process axis, and subjected to conductive heating with electrical current.

    Abstract: In performing friction element welding of a sheet set constituted by two or more metal sheets, an element is press penetrated into the sheet set. The element may include a round columnar mandrel; a disc-shaped collar provided at an upper end face of the mandrel; and a conical pin extending from a lower end face of the mandrel. The element has a plurality of fluidized-metal discharge grooves arranged spirally in a flat area of the lower end face of the mandrel, the flat area excluding the pin. Alternatively, the element may include a round columnar mandrel having a lower end face that forms a conical face with an apical angle αm, the conical face having one or more pairs of chippings discharge grooves or having a plurality of cutting edges, the chippings discharge grooves each extending in a curved manner from an apex of the conical face.

    Abstract: The present disclosure concerns an extrusion profile extending comprising: parallel and spaced-apart upper and lower panel members; and an inner core between the upper and lower panel members, the inner core being integral with and connecting the upper and lower panel members, the inner core comprising first and second curved connecting members having a concave side and the concave sides defining first and second concavities opened outwardly, each of the connecting members merging smoothly with each of the panel members in upper and lower panel-connecting portions of the inner core, the panel-connecting portions being offset inwardly with respect to the panel members to define assembling clearances in marginal edge regions of the upper and lower panel members. It also concerns a method for assembling a panel structure comprising a plurality of extrusion profiles and a corresponding modular structural assembly.
