A composite polymer is obtained by reacting (a) an elastomer having a carboxyl group with (b) metal oxide fine particles each having an epoxy ring-containing group on the particle surface. A thermally cured product of the composite polymer is a material favorable for forming a primer layer which has not only high transparency but also excellent adhesion to a hard coat layer and is excellent also in scratch resistance, heat resistance, weathering resistance, dyeing property, impact resistance and the like. An article such as an optical article whose primer layer comprises the thermally cured product of the composite polymer has high transparency and is excellent also in heat resistance.

The coating composition comprises (a) a functionalized hydrogenated copolymer comprising at least one repeat unit derived from a conjugated diene monomer; preferably including an unsaturated nitrile monomer; and a functional group containing monomer or graft linked compound or combinations thereof; (b) a curing component comprising at least one isocyanate group, or a carbodiimide compound, or an amino resin, or combinations thereof, and (c) a solvent. The coating compounds can be applied to an substrate either before or after the substrate has been vulcanized. The coatings can be cured at ambient temperatures.

Elastomer coating composition are disclosed which cure at room temperature, and form highly flex-resistant, durable, and flexible protective layer on elastomers and provides excellent adhesion to elastomeric and metal substrates. The coating is a solvent solution of (A) a carboxylated hydrogenated acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer, and (B) a room temperature isocyanate curing component. Coated bonded elastomer-metal composites are obtained without an additional application of heat to cure the coating.

A rubber-coated gasket material has a rubber layer formed on one or both sides of a metal sheet. The rubber layer has incorporated therein a nitrile rubber containing a carboxyl group in such an amount that the proportion of a carboxylic monomer as calculated in term as of a monomer content in the rubber component is in the range of 2-15 wt. %. The rubber layer is formed in a thickness of 10-300 .mu.m per side, and bonded to a metal sheet with a primer layer based on a phenolic resin being interposed between the rubber layer and the metal sheet.
