Abstract:
The present invention relates to a roll-like printing paper, a video printer using such roll-like printing paper and a method of detecting a remaining quantity of a roll-like printing paper. More specifically, this invention relates to a roll-like printing paper in which a paper spool may include a detection portion for detecting a rotation of the paper spool and a rotation of the paper spool can be detected by this detection portion. Further, this invention relates to a video printer and a printing paper remaining quantity detection method in which the rotation of the paper spool of this roll-like printing paper may be detected and an alarm may be displayed if it is determined based on the detected paper spool rotation that the remaining quantity of the roll-like printing paper approaches to its end.
Abstract:
A recording device operable with continuous paper in the form of a roll includes a pair of drive rollers for selectively rotating the roll in the forward direction for paying out the paper or in the reverse direction. A controller causes the drive rollers to rotate in the reverse direction in response to a preselected signal. Bar codes representative of serial numbers are printed on one side edge of the paper. While the roll is rotated in the reverse direction, a number identification circuit reads the bar codes 41 and detects the leading edge of the paper on the basis of one bar code positioned at the leading edge and another bar code adjoining a roll position which the leading edge overlies. When the number identification circuit detects the leading edge, the controller switches the direction of rotation of the roll from reverse to forward. Subsequently, a separator is brought into contact with the periphery of the roll in order to separate the paper from the roll and pays out the paper in accordance with the forward rotation.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for measuring the relaxed length of a moving web includes forming a plurality of detectable marks along the length of the web at a repeated length interval. First and second detectors positioned along the web path are separated by a known distance S. A first tensioning force is applied to the moving web, and a first tensioned repeat length of the web is measured by detecting a mark moving past the first detector and then detecting the next mark moving past the second detector. The time separating the detections is determined. A second tensioning force of a known proportional relationship with the first tensioning force is applied to the moving web. A second tensioned repeat length is measured. The speed of the moving web is measured, and a relaxed length is calculated from the first tensioned repeat length, the second tensioned repeat length, and the proportional relationship between the first and second tensioning forces.
Abstract:
A printing device with one or more data capture device. The captured data is used to determine anomalies stet system. Using pattern recognition, image quality verification, and position recognition irregular labels can be discarded and adjustments made to correct for the anomalies and/or reset the printer. A method for using the printing device to analyze the label position and printed image to identify and correct the anomalies.

Abstract:
A system and method for detecting and diverting sections of web having splices on a continuous web is provided. A splice detector is located adjacent a source of continuous web, typically a roll. The movement of the web from the roll is tracked, and the relative location of the splice within the web stream is noted by a controller. Downstream, a web utilization device is provided with a movement detector also connected to the controller. Movement of the splice-containing section through utilization device is tracked so that the splice-containing section is not processed by the utilization device, or is reprocessed on a non-splice-containing section. A cutter is also provided with a movement detector, also connected to the controller. Movement of the web from the utilization device to the cutter is tracked and the section containing the web is cut. A diversion mechanism can be used to remove the cut section of web containing the splice so that it does not appear in the final stream of finished cut sheets.

A method and apparatus for measuring the repeat length (L) of a moving web includes forming a plurality of detectable marks along the length of the web at a repeated length interval. First and second detectors positioned along the web path are separated by a known distance (S). The repeat length of the web is obtained by detecting a mark moving past the first detector and then detecting a mark moving past the second detector, determining the time (t) separating the detections, and measuring the speed of the moving web (V), wherein the repeat length is calculated using the formula L=S+Vt.
