Abstract: An oscillating roller system for a beverage can decorator is driven back and forth by a cam follower. A cam body having a cam is mounted to a frame of the inker system. Three oscillating cam roller assemblies are positioned about the cam body. Rotation of the cam oscillates the cam followers for each one of the oscillating rollers. Bearings of the oscillating roller assemblies includes an inlet gallery and outlet gallery for a closed loop lubrication system. The rollers are water cooled.

Abstract: A print registration system for a beverage can decorator includes an axial registration system and a circumferential registration system. Each registration system is independent and includes a slider that is translated by a motorized lead screw. Axial movement of the axial registration slider is transmitted to axial adjustment of the plate cylinder by a mechanical connection between the axial registration slider and the plate cylinder shaft. Translation of the circumferential registration slider is transmitted to a helical gear mounted to the plate cylinder shaft such that the plate cylinder shaft is rotated by the movement of the circumferential registration slider upon engagement of the helical driven gear with a stationary drive gear.

Abstract: An application unit includes an application mechanism with an impression cylinder, a forme cylinder, a supply roller, and a positioning device. The positioning device has a linear guide and a main supporting member, which is arranged to be movable in a positioning direction, guided by the linear guide, and is arranged rotatably on the main supporting member by a rolling bearing. The positioning device has a transfer supporting member, which is arranged to be movable in the positioning direction relative to the main supporting member, guided by the linear guide. On the transfer supporting member, a component of a bearing seat is provided, and which is configured to receive a rolling bearing arranged on the supply roller. The positioning device has a reservoir supporting member, which is arranged to be movable in the positioning direction, both relative to the main supporting member and relative to the transfer supporting member, guided by the at least one linear guide. An intermediate reservoir for application fluid is arranged on the reservoir supporting member. The reservoir supporting member is arranged, at least partially, between the main supporting member and the transfer supporting member as viewed in the positioning direction.

Abstract: Examples disclosed herein relate to front-to-back registration of a printed content onto a print medium. In one example, a trigger signal generated by a sensor upon detection of a trigger mark on a first surface of a print medium is received. The trigger mark includes a leading edge and a trailing edge, wherein the leading edge and the trailing edge are non-parallel. Based on the trigger signal, a distance of the trailing edge from a point on the leading edge is determined. Once determined, a measure of lateral wander of the print medium with respect to the print path is obtained. The measure of the lateral wander is determined by comparing the distance between the leading edge and the trailing edge, with a threshold value.

Abstract: Systems and methods for aligning preprinted images on a roll of substrate to the moving components of a web press are disclosed. A method in accordance with one embodiment includes determining the speed of the moving components of the press, determining the speed of the web of preprinted images and adjusting the speed of the web of preprinted image to match the speed of the web. In particular embodiments, a press which produces rolls of preprinted material can be modified to change the equivalent cutoff length of the press. In further embodiments, a method of pasting new rolls of material to expiring rolls of material is accomplished by modulating the drive speed of the new roll of material to match the expiring roll of material while at the same time aligning the images on the new roll with the expiring roll.
