An apparatus for batching articles from a continuous stream of articles has a conduit comprising an entry duct (2) in which the articles are accelerated by suction. The suction air is drawn from the exit end of the duct, close to a pair of counter-rotating sealing rollers (20) which have resiliently yielding peripheral faces between which the articles pass. At the exit end of the conduit a pair of closure members (24) on opposite sides of the conduit are rotatable in 90° steps in order to collect the articles in batches. The closure members counter-rotate so that in each step they move in the general direction of movement of the articles. In this way it is possible to batch relatively delicate articles at high rates of throughflow.

A device for metering and entraining a measured quantity of a dry, powdered and/or granular product with a gas stream moving in a conduit system. The device includes a hollow housing having a gas inlet opening and a gas and product outlet opening to and from, respectively, the interior of the housing connected to the conduit system so that a gas stream enters and exits the housing in the conduit system. Inlet structure of an appropriate size at the gas inlet opening causes the gas stream to move between the inlet opening and the outlet opening through the interior of the housing at a sufficient velocity to pick up and entrain product in the interior of the housing in the gas stream. Product is allowed to enter the housing through a product receiving opening from a product supply container to facilitate a supply of product to the interior of the housing. A gate and a drive therefor is provided for moving the gate between a closed position blocking the product opening and an opened position spaced from the product opening for allowing the product to enter the interior of the housing. Adjustment structure is provided for facilitating an adjustment of the spacing between the gate and the product opening when the gate is in the opened position to facilitate a metering of the volume of product entering the interior of the housing.

A high pressure transfer device for feeding wood chips to a digster in the production of paper pulp has enhanced efficiency. A pocketed rotor is mounted for rotation in a housing having first through fourth ports, with a screen at the third port for screening wood chips out of liquid passing through that third port. This screen is blanked at the leading edge in the direction of rotation so that as a pocket rotates into operative association with the first and third ports, the pocket inlet has an arcuate extent of about two inches which is exposed to the first port --large enough to allow chips to start flowing freely into the pocket--before the outlet of that pocket is exposed to a suction source in communication with the screen. A pump supplies high pressure liquid to the second port, but the second and fourth ports are constructed so that a pocket inlet--as the rotor rotates into operative association with the second and fourth ports--is not operatively exposed to the high pressure liquid from the pump until that pocket outlet is already in communiction with the fourth port over an arcuate extent of about two to three inches, allowing chips in the pocket to escape rather than be compressed by the high pressure flow.
