A hydraulic system for an aircraft includes a brake operation device, a pressure supply, a reservoir, a shut-off valve, and a wheel brake. The shut-off valve is in fluid communication with and is disposed between the pressure supply and the brake valve. The shut-off valve can include a poppet, a first valve seat and a second valve seat. Movement of the poppet is controlled by operation of the brake operation device. The poppet is movable between a first position where the poppet acts against the first valve seat and a second position where the poppet acts against the second valve seat. In the first position, fluid flow is blocked between the pressure supply and the brake valve through the shut-off valve. In the second position, fluid flow is allowed between the pressure supply and the brake valve through the shut-off valve. The wheel brake is in fluid communication with and downstream from the shut-off valve.

A button actuator is disposed on the handle. Movement of the handle from the intermediate stop position to the full actuated position is obstructed to prevent inadvertent operation of the brake in the parking brake state unless the button actuator is depressed.

In the field of avionics, it is difficult to justify initiation of new aircraft programmes for replacement of small numbers of niche aircraft. Instead, in many cases, retrofitting existing aircraft is preferred for economic reasons. In this respect, upgrading existing braking systems to accommodate replacement of existing brake units employing sintered friction materials with brake units employing carbon-carbon composite friction materials is desirable. However, when upgrading the braking systems it is necessary to ensure that the integrity of the existing airframe is not compromised by the use of the new brake assemblies employing the carbon-carbon composite friction materials. Consequently, the present invention replaces existing pressure control valves of existing braking systems with an electronic control unit (126) coupled to a pressure control servovalve (128) thereby ensuring proper application of hydraulic pressure to brake assemblies (122). An advantage of this invention is that the pressure profile of the hydraulic fluid is controllable and hence the integrity of the airframe is maintained.

The system and method for monitoring wear of one or more aircraft parts, such as an aircraft brake, an aircraft tire, a standby system, and landing gear. One or more sensors are provided for sensing a parameter of usage, and an estimate of usage of the part can be determined based upon the signal indicating the sensed value of the parameter of usage of the aircraft part. A plurality of sensors can be provided for sensing usage of a plurality of parts of the aircraft, and the estimate of usage of the part can be stored for access of the estimate by ground personnel. As applied to monitoring wear of an aircraft brake, a linear brake wear indicator attached to the brake moves a discrete distance when the brake is actuated, and a linear position encoder measures the distance traveled by the linear brake wear indicator as an indication of brake usage. A wheel speed monitor may also be provided for measuring the aircraft wheel speed, for distinguishing between static brake applications and moving brake applications, based upon the wheel speed signal.

Various brake control systems and methods are provided herein. In one implementation, a brake pressure control system having a shutoff valve (24) in a hydraulic conduit (26, 30) between a pressure origination source (16, 18) and a wheel brake (20), the shutoff valve selectively isolates the pressure origination source from the brake responsive to an indication that a wheel associated with the brake meets a skid condition, and an actuator assembly (28) comprising an actuator (34) that regulates fluid brake pressure after the shutoff valve isolates the pressure origination source from the brake. The actuator assembly operates independently of the shutoff valve and is coupled to the hydraulic conduit between the shutoff valve and the brake. The actuator assembly also effects displacement of the actuator for increasing and decreasing brake pressure. A controller (44) determines if the skid condition has been reached and controls the shutoff valve and the actuator assembly based upon the skid condition.

The invention relates to an actuator for an electromechanical brake, the actuator comprising a pusher and a first drive member arranged to move the pusher in register with a stack of disks and to apply a braking pressure to the stack of disks, the actuator including a second drive member comprising a piezoelectric assembly suitable for modulating the braking pressure applied to the stack of disks. According to the invention, the piezoelectric assembly is disposed inside the actuator so as to present an end that is stationary.
