    Abstract: Machine and method for making air-filled packing cushions from a roll of prefabricated film material having a longitudinally extending inflation channel near one edge of the material and chambers which communicate with the channel through laterally extending passageways. The roll rests on a pair of spaced apart, horizontally extending rollers. The film material is fed from the roll to an inflation tube which extends into the inflation channel, air is introduced into the chambers through the inflation tube to inflate the cushions, and a longitudinally extending seal is formed across the passageways between the channel and the chambers after the cushions are inflated.

    Abstract: An improved film sealing and cutting apparatus (10) for use with a shrink-wrap machine that individually wraps articles (219) sequentially with shrink-wrap film material (200) of different possible thickness and composition, especially thick, tough film which would be difficult to seal. The apparatus (10) includes two pairs of selectively heated rollers (97, 98). Overlapping layers (209) of film material wrapped around an article are passed between peripheral surfaces of each roller pair. The first roller pair forms a thermal conditioning pre-seal (208) between opposing surfaces of the overlapping layers by application of heat and pressure along the peripheral surfaces of the first roller pair. The second roller pair then completes the seal and cuts through the opposing surfaces, leaving a margin between a cutting path formed by the peripheral surfaces of the second roller pair and the seal.

    Abstract: A bag forming apparatus and method with single drive unit operating a drive roller and a cross-cut mechanism with the drive motor assembly being internalized within the drive roller. The apparatus is particularly designed for feeding, solely through use of a full film width contact drive roller, film material derived from a single supply roll of two ply film material. The arrangement avoids tracking problems, as well as any requirement for a supply roll driving, braking and tension monitoring. The supply roll can be laid in position on underlying, passive support rollers prevented from inertia induced over-rolling by a passive friction device which tension in the film material being fed between the single, cylindrical drive roller and an opposing pair of spaced, driven rollers in a pinching relationship with the film material being fed past the drive roller. The apparatus and method features easy slide in, slide out edge sealer and vent hole former inserts that are held by, and move with, the bag width adjustable driven rollers. The edge seal inserts feature a heating element that is compressed against the film material by an internal bias in the edge sealer. The heating element can be a a plug-in heating unit easily inserted and removed from the remainder of the insert. The cross-cut device is swung into a film material pinching position with respect to the drive roller by a drive transmission assembly and, upon return to a stand-by state, the cross-cut device automatically separates the completed bag below and partially completed bag above the cross-cut/seal. The bag forming apparatus of the present invention is particularly well suited for use with a high speed, high volume foam dispenser.

    Abstract: A continuous motion sealer of a type typically employed for applying metallic foil seals to the mouths of containers for fluid comestibles is disclosed. The device includes means for cutting a flat seal of predetermined profile from a roll-supplied heat activated material, and transport the seal to the containers or other parts following which it is heat sealed. Improved camming means is provided which enables the sealing heater to engage a seal in the absence of other than vertical motion. A punch and die assembly includes a programmable electronic material advance mechanism. Each sealing head assembly includes an electronic band heater and thermocouple, as well as a vacuum pickup for individual seals. The thermocouple communicates with a separate sealing head temperature controller, programmable with regard to temperature setting, and an alarm connected to a system shutdown in the event of failure. Means is provided to accommodate containers of differing heights, the same means providing for the lowering of the containers away from the heated sealing heads when operation is interrupted. Two multiple position rotary electrical unions are provided. One supplies power to the heaters, and the other connects temperature sensors to the heat controller. Operation is interrupted by an air operated cylinder which prevents heat damage to containers being sealed.
