Abstract:
An in-situ fiber-optic temperature field measurement is disclosed that can allow process monitoring and diagnosis for thermoplastic composite welding and other applications. A distributed fiber-optic sensor can be permanently embedded in a thermoplastic welded structure when it is welded and left there to perform lifelong monitoring and inspection. The fiber optic sensor can include a dissolvable coating, or a coating matched to the composite material to be welded. Other applications include in-situ fiber-optic temperature field measurement on thermoset composite curing (autoclave), for thermoplastic and thermoset composites during compression molding, and for fiber-optic field measurements on freeze/thaw of large items of public health interest, such as stored or transported foodstuffs.
Abstract:
The specification discloses a method and a coupler for joining polymeric tubular objects, such as pipe. The coupler includes (a) a rigid, electromagnetically inductive carrier, (b) a temperature-responsive expandable material on the carrier, and (c) a polymeric material on the expandable material. The method includes the steps of (a) inserting the coupler into the ends of two adjacent polymeric tubular objects, (b) creating an electromagnetic field about the coupler causing the carrier to heat, in turn causing the expandable material to expand and force the polymeric material against the tubular objects, and further in turn causing the polymeric material to melt, soften, or liquefy, and (c) terminating the electromagnetic field allowing the polymeric material to cure or solidify to bond to the tubular objects.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a fixing element for fixing to a base body, in particular to building surfaces comprising a support and an reactive adhesive.
Abstract:
A method for electromagnetic welding of moulded parts wherein a mould and at least two moulded parts for coupling are placed in the mould, wherein at least a contact surface between the moulded parts comprises a thermally activiated coupling means and an induction-senstive component. The coupling means is activated by heating the induction-senstive component by means of an inductor. The inductor comprises an electrical conductor which, under alternating voltage, generates an electromagnetic field which is substantially cylindrical in at least a direction of welding. The moulded parts are pressed together in the configuration defined by the mould, wherein the moulded parts are coupled by the thermally activated coupling means. Also disclosed is an assembly of moulded parts, an inductor, an assembly of the inductor with an alternating current generator, and a device for electromagnetic welding.
Abstract:
The invention relates to an agent for heating materials comprising (a) at least one plurality of electrically non-conductive susceptors and (b) at least one plurality of electrically conductive susceptors. Preferably the electrically non-conductive susceptors comprise micron-sized ferrimagnetic particles and the electrically conductive particles comprise ferromagnetic particles or intrinsically conductive polymer particles.
Abstract:
A susceptor composition that can bond two or more layers or substrates to one another and that can be used to coat or cut a substrate. The susceptor composition is activated in the presence of radio frequency (RF) energy. In one embodiment, the susceptor composition of the present invention comprises a susceptor and a carrier. The carrier and susceptor are blended with one another and form a mixture, preferably a uniform mixture. The susceptor is present in an amount effective to allow the susceptor composition to be heated by RF energy. In a preferred embodiment, the susceptor also functions as an adhesive. The susceptor is an ionic or polar compound and acts as either a charge-carrying or an oscillating/vibrating component of the susceptor composition. The susceptor generates thermal energy in the presence of an RF electromagnetic or electrical field (hereafter RF field).

An adhesive composition which is curable by electromagnetic induction heating when it is applied to various substrates, said adhesive comprising a mixture of(I) An epoxy resin component and(II) A hardener component and(III) From 2 to 60% by weight of (I) and (II) of an electromagnetic energy absorbing material is described.
Abstract:
A process for laminating a material layer to a support including: providing the support, applying the material layer to the support, a heat-activatable adhesive being applied to s side of the material layer facing the dimensionally stable support and/or to the side of the dimensionally stable support facing the material layer, pressing the flexible material layer and the dimensionally stable support together by means of a lower dimensionally stable mold half and an upper dimensionally stable mold half, irradiating the mold halves, the support and the material layer with electromagnetic radiation, in particular with microwave radiation, high-frequency radiation or induction radiation, whereby the adhesive is activated directly or indirectly.
Abstract:
A flexible ferromagnetic strip is used to induction-weld seams in polymer pipes. The strip is a blend of strontium ferrite, a surfactant, and an LDPE binder. A process to produce the profile is to mix the ingredients together followed by granulation and extrusion or calendering. The strip is used in conjunction with an induction coil sized to fit over a polymer pipe coupling containing the strip and separate segments of polymer pipe. The strip is heated by induction current induced by an electromagnetic field generated by the coil. The heated strip causes the polymer pipe segments to be thermoplastically welded together.
