The rotary head tool comprises generally a toolholder, a tool that is removably or fixedly connectable to the toolholder, and an insert that that incorporates a cutting edge finable into the tool. The toolholder is formed to hold the tool with the insert therein at a particular angle. Elements of the rotary head tool of the present invention, such as the insert, may be “off the shelf elements and consequently the present invention may be produced at a low cost. Embodiments of the present invention are designed so that the rotary head tool provides economical benefits and affordability for the user and to provide performance benefits of SPRTs.

    摘要: The rotary cutting tool is provided with a tool body (11) having a shank portion (11A) and a neck portion (11B), an insert attachment seat (12) formed at the tip of the neck portion (11 B), and a cutting insert detachably mounted on the insert attachment seat (12) so as to be coaxial with the axis line of the shank portion (11A). The insert attachment seat (12) is provided with a bottom surface (12A) on which a side surface which serves as a seating surface of a cutting insert is seated and a wall surface (12B) in contact with a peripheral surface of the cutting insert. On the bottom surface (12A), a plurality of recessed grooves (20) which are recessed from the bottom surface to extend in the circumferential direction of the neck portion (11 B), with the both ends being opened on an outer peripheral surface of the neck portion (11B), are formed so as to travel around the insert attachment seat (12) around the axis line (O). Each of these recessed grooves (20) extends in such a manner that at least the both ends thereof move radially to the outer peripheral side with respect to the axis line (O) toward the both end sides from a circle (E) which is centered on the axis line (O) in contact with the center between the both ends. The bottom surface (12A) extends between the mutually opposing ends of the recessed grooves (20) adjacent in the circumferential direction.

The top surface includes an asymmetric chipbreaker feature adjacent a cutting edge that includes a finishing portion, a roughing portion, and a transition portion. The asymmetric chipbreaker feature includes a first rake face extending from the cutting edge, a second rake face between a bottom face and the first rake face, and a back face between a central island and the bottom face. The second rake face and the back face are sinusoidal waveforms with different periods to cause the distances from the cutting edge to the second rake face and back face to vary. The first and second rake faces are formed at different rake angles to provide effective chip control during machining operations.

This application further relates to a method for the machining of a workpiece using such an indexable insert.     摘要: A multi-cartridge cutting tool includes a body with a plurality of cartridge-receiving pockets, and a plurality of insert-receiving cartridges mounted to a respective pocket. A round cutting insert is mounted to each cartridge. The pockets are formed at predetermined distances from a central, longitudinal axis of the body to form a first group and a second group of cutting inserts such that the cutting edges of the first group of cutting inserts and the cutting edges of the second group of cutting inserts are located at different axial and radial distances from the central, longitudinal axis of the body to perform different machining operations. A third group of cutting insert(s) may exist for cutting tools with an odd number of cutting inserts. The different types of machining pockets allow for high feed rates, while greatly improving the life of the cutting insert as compared to conventional cutting tools.
