Apparatus is provided for piercing and flanging a metal workpiece. The apparatus includes a punch and a back-up die with the punch driven by a hydraulic ram. The punch, die, and ram are mounted on a frame which is movably carried by a main support. A workpiece support is affixed to the main support and positions the workpiece between the punch and the die. The ram moves the punch toward and away from the workpiece relative to the frame and also causes the frame to move relative to the workpiece. This arrangement enables the punch and die to seek operative positions relative to the workpiece without the necessity of the workpiece being precisely positioned. The punch and die are also designed to be reversed to provide the opposite operation on the workpiece, if desired.

A flexure hinge assembly wherein a pair of fixed telescoped tubular members are provided, each having one or more pairs of axially spaced slots extending through their walls, the ends of one slot of each pair terminating a predetermined circumferential distance from the corresponding ends of the other slot of the same pair to form at least two flexure portions between the ends. The flexure portions of one of the tubular members extend parallel to the axes of the members, and the flexure portions of the other tubular member extend perpendicular to the axes of the members. Forming methods of one-piece weldless wheels made of metal sheets including the steps of rolling, forming a primary wheel rim and a primary wheel disc, roll forming, compressing and shaping, in order to obtain one-piece weldless wheels. The methods can form weldless wheels by rolling, cold roll forming and cold extruding, which can reduce energy consumption by 45-55% and cut down material cost by 5-15% while improving strength of the wheel by 20-30%. A wheel with different thicknesses can be formed by the methods and can meet the requirements on mechanical strength. The methods can improve the precision of the wheel and minimize the swing value and jerk value. The wheel produced is safer, and the regular air tight test on the wheel is not necessary.
