A floating breakwater comprises two end baffles 12 and 16 and at least one intermediate baffle 14 therebetween, the baffles being spaced parallel (e.g. by cords 20), means (e.g. floats 18) for suspending the baffles virtually in the liquid in which the waves are propogated, and means (e.g. tie ropes 52 and anchors 54) for anchoring the device, each of the baffles being valved to permit liquid flow therethrough in one direction only, the end baffles being valved to open toward one another. In Fig. 1 the valving comprises swingable panels 22. In Fig. 5 each baffle comprises a sheet 21 supported from the float by members 40 and provided with holes 36 covered by flapper strips 46 swingably mounted to permit liquid through in one direction. When the seaward and shoreward baffles 12 and 16 (Fig. 1) are anchored both at their tops and bottoms, overload protection is provided by means of pull-out units 56 (Fig. 12) on the lines 20 attached to the lower ends of the valve sheets 12, 14, 16. The breakwater is suspended in the liquid with the baffles normal to the direction of travel of the waves. Fig. 13 shows the breakwater anchored at 58, 60, 62 with a cable attached to the breakwater at 70 passing around pulleys 64, 66 and terminating in take-up and let-off devices 72, 74 so that the breakwater can orient itself with a 90 degrees range.
