The drive force of the hydraulic pump motor is input to allow an electric motor to generate electric energy. The electric energy generated by the electric motor is stored in a battery. The piston is energizable by the spring to move in a braking direction for bringing the fixed side and the rotary side friction plates into a pressure contact, whereas the piston pressure receiving chamber can be be supplied with pressure fluid to displace the piston in a braking release direction, thereby separating the fixed side friction plate and the rotary side friction plate from each other. An operating valve (41, 42) supplies pressure fluid into the hydraulic motor, and a hydraulic pilot valve (52, 53) provides pilot pressure fluid for use to switch the operating valve. A pilot pressure fluid from the hydraulic pilot valve is delivered through a hydraulic circuit (28) into the piston pressure receiving chamber. The braking apparatus further includes in the hydraulic circuit a fluid flow control valve (30) which has an area of valve opening progressively reduced as a function of a distance of travel of the piston moving and displaced from a braking position towards a braking release position.

A target fan rotational speed (R.P.M.) corresponding to a temperature detected by a temperature detector is determined according to a set correlation and the capacity of a variable-capacity hydraulic pump is varied so that the rotational speed of a cooling fan becomes that determined target fan rotational speed. It thereby becomes possible to precisely control the blowing air volume (R.P.M.) of the cooling fan, and, when the cooling fan is driven with a hydraulic source, to construct a hydraulic circuit with fewer parts. Moreover, in cases where the torque absorbed by the fan-drive hydraulic motor fluctuates, control is effected to suppress fluctuations in the cooling fan rotational speed and stabilize the rotation. Furthermore, in cases where the load on the fan-drive hydraulic motor fluctuates, control is effected to suppress fluctuations in the cooling fan rotational speed and stabilize the rotation.

A braking apparatus for a hydraulic motor has a housing and a cylinder block. The apparatus includes fixed side frictional plates mounted to the housing and movable side frictional plates mounted to the cylinder block. In addition, a piston for pressing the fixed side frictional plates against the movable side frictional plates is also provided. A spring for thrusting the piston to move in a first direction thus tending to establish a first state in which the two sets of frictional plates are pressed together is also included. Furthermore, the apparatus includes a piston driving pressure receiving chamber disposed between the housing and the piston for thrusting the piston to move in a second direction under a pressure that is introduced into the piston driving pressure receiving chamber to establish a second state in which the two sets of frictional plates are separated from each other. The apparatus also includes a stopper for regulating a space between the fixed side frictional plates and the movable side frictional plates while the piston is moving in the second direction. In addition, the piston is movable in the second direction a distance that is greater than the size of the space.
