Abstract: Distributed radio frequency (RF) communication systems for automotive are disclosed herein. In certain embodiments, an RF communication system for an automobile includes an RF module located close to an antenna to satisfy a specified output power with small insertion loss. Additionally, the baseband processor is placed remotely from the RF module in a different area of the automobile to provide a lower temperature environment. Additionally, the RF module communicates with the baseband processor in a digital format eliminating the need for higher cost cabling (for instance, due to higher noise immunity arising from using digital signaling) and using digital transfer cabling, which can already be present in the automobile for other purposes. The RF module can include an RF front-end (RFFE) and a transceiver used for providing frequency conversion, for instance, between RF and baseband.

Abstract: Envelope tracking systems for power amplifiers are provided herein. In certain embodiments, an envelope tracker is provided for a power amplifier that amplifies an RF signal. The envelope tracker includes a multi-level switching circuit having an output that provides an output current that changes in relation to an envelope signal indicating an envelope of the RF signal when the envelope tracker is operating in an envelope tracking mode. The multi-level switching circuit includes a multi-level supply (MLS) modulator that receives multiple regulated voltages of different voltage levels, and an MLS control circuit that controls the selection of the MLS modulator over time based on the envelope signal. When transitioning the MLS modulator from selection of one regulated voltage level to another regulated voltage level, the MLS control circuit provides a soft transition to gradually switch the regulated voltage levels.

In certain configurations, an envelope tracking system includes a digital filter that generates a filtered envelope signal based on a digital envelope signal representing an envelope of a radio frequency signal, a buck converter controllable by the filtered envelope signal and including an output electrically connected to a power amplifier supply voltage, a digital-to-analog converter module including an output electrically connected to the output of the buck converter and that provides an output current, and a digital shaping and delay circuit configured to generate a shaped envelope signal based on shaping the filtered envelope signal. The shaped envelope signal controls a magnitude of the output current, and the digital shaping and delay circuit controls a delay of the shaped envelope signal to align the output of the digital-to-analog converter module and the output of the buck converter.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for envelope tracking systems with automatic mode selection are provided herein. In certain configurations, a power amplifier system includes a power amplifier configured to provide amplification to a radio frequency signal and to receive power from a power amplifier supply voltage, and an envelope tracker including a signal bandwidth detection circuit configured to generate a detected bandwidth signal based on processing an envelope signal corresponding to an envelope of the radio frequency signal. The envelope tracker further includes a switch bank configured to receive a plurality of regulated voltages, a filter configured to filter an output of the switch bank to generate the power amplifier supply voltage, and a mode control circuit configured to control a filtering characteristic of the filter based on the detected bandwidth signal.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for envelope tracking systems are provided. Abstract: Apparatus and methods for phase compensation in power amplifiers are disclosed herein. In certain implementations, a method of phase compensation in a power amplifier includes amplifying a radio frequency signal using a power amplifier that includes an input stage and an output stage, powering a bipolar transistor of the output stage using a power amplifier supply voltage, changing a voltage level of the power amplifier supply voltage, the bipolar transistor having an input reactance that changes in response to the change in the voltage level of the power amplifier supply voltage, and compensating for a variation in a phase delay of the power amplifier arising from the change in the input reactance of the bipolar transistor using a compensation circuit that is electrically connected to an output of the input stage.
