A validity period of a refresh token for updating an access token of a first device, from a device list for the smart home service, registered in a connectivity server, is checked, when the device list is received from a server. The server is requested to re-register the first device, when a period to the validity period is less than a predetermined threshold period.

To solve the problems that may occur due to the leakage of user account information, the present disclosure may manage the security using the device token that is used independently of that of the server, that is generated by a home device, and that can be used for device authentication when a smart phone controls home appliances. With the use of the device token, the present disclosure may solve the problems that the status information of home appliances is exposed by another person or the home appliances are controlled by another person, even though the user account information is leaked.

A method and apparatus for controlling devices for a smart home service are provided. The method includes grouping devices to receive at least one command simultaneously from among devices registered to the smart home service into a group for one mode, generating mode configuration information for each mode including grouped devices for the mode and at least one command for the mode, transmitting the mode configuration information for each mode to the registered devices, selecting one of each mode for which the mode configuration information has been generated, and transmitting a mode activation request for activating the selected mode to the registered devices.
