The production method for the thermoplastic resin composition is provided. (A): a polyphenylene ether, (B): a polyamide. (C): a phase-solvating agent, (D): an electrically conductive carbon black and/or a fine fibrous carbon, and (E) an improving agent for shock resistance.
Abstract:
A conductive thermoplastic composition is prepared by a method in which poly (arylene ether) and, optionally, a portion of polyamide are added to a first feed port, polyamide is added to a second feed port, and a concentrate of conductive carbon black in polyamide is added to the second feed port or a third feed port. Whereas preparation of conductive poly(arylene ether)/polyamide compositions has typically required an extruder having at a screw length to diameter ratio of at least 40, the present method allows the use of extruders having a screw length to diameter ratio less than 38 and as low as 20 or lower. The conductive thermoplastic composition prepared by the method exhibits high conductivity and high impact strength, and it is useful for molding articles such as electrostatically-paintable automotive exterior panels.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein is a method of making conductive thermoplastic compositions, particularly conductive poly(arylene ether)/polyamide compositions using a conductive masterbatch, whereas the conductive masterbatch is made by a method comprising mixing conductive carbon black and a first resin to form a conductive carbon black/resin mixture; and compounding the conductive carbon black/resin mixture with a second resin, wherein the first resin is a powder.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a thermoplastic composition comprising a polyphenylene ether resin and a styrenic resin wherein the processes comprises a concentrate of polyphenylene ether resin with an organic phosphate compound. The concentrate allows for ease of handling of polyphenylene ether resin without the risk of dust ignition while obtaining substantially the same physical properties as obtained with polyphenylene ether resin powder. The invention also relates to articles formed out of the compositions made by the process of the invention.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a thermoplastic composition comprising a polyphenylene ether resin and optionally, a styrenic resin wherein the processes comprises a polyphenylene ether resin in a particulate form having less than about 5% by weight, preferably less than about 2% by weight, more preferably less than about 1% by weight, and most preferably essentially no particles less than about 75 microns in size. The particulate form allows for ease of handling of polyphenylene ether resin with a substantially reduced risk of dust ignition while obtaining substantially the same physical properties as obtained with polyphenylene ether resin powder. The invention also relates to articles formed out of the compositions made by the process of the invention.

Abstract:
An article comprising a paint film disposed on at least a portion of a thermoplastic section. The thermoplastic section is made of a thermoplastic composition. The thermoplastic composition has a compatibilized blend of a poly(arylene ether) and a polyamide, an electrically conductive carbon black, and an impact modifier. The electrically conductive carbon black has agglomerates and the agglomerates have an average agglomerate size greater than or equal to 30 square micrometers. The weight ratio of electrically conductive carbon black to polyamide is greater than or equal to 0.043.
Abstract:
A single or multi-stage process for providing compatible thermoplastic blends of polyphenylene ether resins and polyamide resins is provided by combining such resins with a compatiblizing amount of an agent having in its molecule both acyl-functionality as well as at least one of the following functional groups: carboxylic acid or acid anhydride, acid amide, imido, carboxylic acid ester, amino or hydroxyl group.
Abstract:
The surface gloss and flexural modulus of articles molded from blends of a polyphenylene ether resin and a rubber modified, high impact polystyrene (HIPS) are regulated by controlling the swell index of the HIPS rubber within the range of 8 to 20. Duller surface finishes and higher flexural moduli are achieved with use of higher swell indices, while glossier surfaces and lower flexural moduli are obtained with lower swell indices within this range.
Abstract:
Functionalized polyphenylene ether compositions are provided which are particularly useful for effecting compatibility for a blend of polyphenylene ether resin and a polyamide resin. The functionalized-polyphenylene ether is the reaction product of a polyphenylene ether polymer and a compound having the general formula (i)--Z--(ii), wherein group (i) is a polyphenylene ether-philic moiety such as acyl chloride, group (ii) is a polyamide-philic moiety such as dicarboxylic acid anhydride, and Z is a divalent hydrocarbon radical providing a covalent linkage between groups (i) and (ii). An example of the compound having general formula (i)--Z--(ii) is trimellitic anhydride acid chloride.
