Abstract:
A system includes a well tool for deployment in a well, a controller, and a link coupled between the controller and the well tool. The well tool comprises plural control units, each of the plural control units having a microprocessor and an initiator coupled to the microprocessor. Each microprocessor is adapted to communicate bi-directionally with the controller. The controller is adapted to send a plurality of activation commands to respective microprocessors to activate the respective control units. Each activation command containing a unique identifier corresponding to a respective control unit.
Abstract:
An isolation apparatus is provided between an electrical conductor and an electrically-activated well tool. The isolation apparatus has a blocking element to enable a signal having a first electrical polarity to pass through the element. The blocking element blocks a signal having a second electrical polarity.
Abstract:
A detonator assembly includes a capacitor, an initiator, a transformer and an addressable chip. The initiator is electrically connected to the capacitor, the transformer is mechanically and electrically connected to the capacitor and the addressable chip is mechanically and electrically connected to the transformer. The initiator may be bonded or fused to the capacitor, and the transformer may be bonded or fused to the capacitor. The capacitor, initiator, transformer and addressable chip form a unified integrated detonating unit.
Abstract:
A perforating gun or other downhole tool includes one or more explosive devices that are activable by corresponding one or more initiator devices, such as capacitor discharge units (CDUs). Each CDU includes an explosive foil initiator (EFI) or some other type of a high-energy bridge-type initiator, an energy source (e.g., a slapper capacitor), and a switch coupling the energy source and the EFI or other bridge-type initiator. An electrical cable is coupled to the CDUs for providing a voltage to energize the energy source in the CDUs to provide energy to each EFI. In response to activation of a trigger signal down the electrical cable, the switch is closed to couple the energy source to the EFI.
Abstract:
A safety system for use with an apparatus lowered into a well includes a power supply and a controller that monitors at least a predefined condition of the apparatus. A switch blocks power from the apparatus until the predefined condition is present. A test system includes a test device that generates a signal having a predetermined characteristic (a certain frequency, for example). A controller detects the signal and enables performance of a test operation when the signal of the predetermined frequency is present.
Abstract:
Apparatus and methods for controlling and communicating with one or more tools in a downhole tool string including a tractor, an auxiliary tractor tool, a logging tool, a safety sub, a release mechanism, a unit containing sensors for monitoring downhole conditions, a setting tool, and a perforating gun. Control and communication are accomplished by sending signals from the surface to control switches in the control units on the tool, with redundant switches for safety, to state machines in the respective control units, each state machine returning a signal verifying switch status to the surface. The state machine need not return a signal including a unique identifier.

Also provided are apparatus and methods for controlling and communicating with one or more perforating guns, release devices, and explosive devices in a string to be lowered into a wellbore. Control and communication are accomplished by sending signals from the surface to control switches in the control units on the tool, with redundant switches for safety, to state machines in the respective control units, each state machine returning a signal verifying switch status to the surface. Control and power functions are accomplished with voltage of different polarities for safety.

Abstract:
A tool activation system and method includes receiving an authorization code of a user to verify access rights of a user to activate the tool. In one example, the authorization code is receive from a smart card. The environment around the tool, which can be in a wellbore, for example, is checked. In response to the authorization code and the checking of the environment, activation of the tool is enabled.
Abstract:
A downhole tool includes a device to be activated by electrical energy and a micro-switch that includes conductors and an element between the first and second conductors selected from the group consisting of: a dielectric element capable of being modulated to provide a conductive path in response to receipt of electrical energy; and an element moveable in response to application of an electrical energy. The micro-switch may be formed of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technology or microelectronics technology.
