摘要: A robust microelectromechanical switch. In an illustrative embodiment, the switch is adapted for use in a display and includes a first flexible surface and a second surface. The second surface is angled relative to the first surface, forming a wedge the first surface and the second surface. A first terminal and a second terminal are positioned relative to the first flexible surface and the second surface so that selective flexing of the flexible surface electrically couples or uncouples the first terminal to the second terminal. In a more specific embodiment, the switch further includes a first mechanism for selectively applying an electrostatic force between the first flexible surface and the second surface. The first surface is positioned on a first elastic flexible layer, and the second surface is positioned on a second layer. The first mechanism includes a first actuator electrode that is coupled to the first surface, and a second actuator electrode that is coupled to the second surface. A sufficient charge differential applied between the first actuator electrode and the second actuator electrode will attract the first electrode to the second electrode, thereby flexing the flexible layer toward the second layer. The sidewalls define a perimeter of a cell that houses the switch. A protrusion extends from a third layer between the sidewalls, thereby indenting the first layer, and thereby forming the wedge.

摘要: Micro-electromechanical devices having an improved flexible layer enable the use of material having a wider range of elastic modulus. The MEM devices include a substantially non-pliable layer and a substantially flexible layer both of which include electrodes that when energized will create electrostatic forces that attracts the flexible layer to the non-pliable layer. The flexible layer has perforations or apertures cut into the flexible layer of a MEMs device to alter operational properties such as electrostatic sensitivity, resonance frequency, rate of change of sensitivity above the resonance frequency, oscillating mass, panel stiffness and others parameters.

摘要: An electronic computer system is formed of a control processor (1) and a plurality of processor elements (3.sub.1 -3.sub.n). Each of the processor elements (3.sub.1 -3.sub.n) has a control unit (30.sub.i) that processes instructions issued by the control processor (1) in the SIMD manner, a data-driven processing unit (31.sub.i) for performing arithmetic/logic operations and data transfering to a destination processor element of the processor elements (3.sub.1 -3.sub.n) through a packet transmission network (22) in a data-driven manner and a local memory (35.sub.i). The control processor (1) broadcasts instructions to set the data-driven processing unit (31.sub.i) in each of the processor elements (3.sub.1 -3.sub.n) contents that are to be performed in the data-driven manner. In each of the processor elements (3.sub.1 -3.sub.n), operations in the data-driven processing unit (31.sub.i) based on the data-driven manner are performed in parallel with setting of the data-driven processing unit (31.sub.i).

摘要: The computer system presented comprises a data file having entries each designed to hold data, an advanced and a completed mapping file each having entries each designed to hold a data-file-entry address, a state-modification queue having entries each designed to hold substance of a modification made on the advanced mapping file, means for holding statuses of operations provided in respective correspondence with the entries of the state-modification queue, and a means for performing issued operations out of order. Making a modification on the advanced mapping file, entering the substance of this modification into the state-modification queue, and issuing operations are each to be done in one cycle. Each issued operation is to be executed out of order. And, if it is terminated normally, the corresponding part of the means for holding statuses of operations is to be altered accordingly. The system can attain high performance easily and utilize programs described in any machine language for traditional register-based/stack-based processors.

摘要: An optical recording system in which the optical head is operated in physical contact with the surface of the optical recording medium during system operation at a selected operating speed. The optical head includes one or more optical elements mounted on a substrate which is in physical, sliding contact with the recording medium. The substrate is fabricated from a crystalline material which has a non-linear load versus friction characteristic in the negative load region. When the head is in sliding contact with the recording medium surface, a restoring force is generated which maintains the optical head in physical contact with the recording medium overcoming any lifting forces generated by the moving air layer adjacent the recording medium surface. This allows the head to be operated with a negative external load applied. Utilizing the optical head having the objective lens mounted on the substrate in close proximity to the recording medium surface allows high density recording to be achieved without the requirement of an electro-mechanical servo system to provide beam focusing for the system.
