Abstract: A tunable transmission optical filter is optically coupled between a laser section and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) section of a tunable laser device. The optical filter may be tuned to provide a high transmission near the lasing peak while suppressing a significant portion of back-propagating amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) of the SOA section. Without the optical filter, the laser output spectrum may develop side lobes of higher intensity after the ASE is amplified and reflected in the forward direction by the laser gain and mirror sections. While lessening the side lobes, the optical filter simultaneously transmits the laser peak for amplification by the SOA section.

Abstract: In some implementations, a thermally-controlled photonic structure may include a suspended region that is suspended over a substrate; a plurality of bridge elements connected to the suspended region and configured to suspend the suspended region over the substrate, where a plurality of openings are defined between the plurality of bridge elements; and at least one heater element having a modulated width disposed on the suspended region. The at least one heater element having the modulated width may include at least one section of a greater width and at least one section of a lesser width. The at least one section of the greater width may be in alignment with an opening of the plurality of openings and the at least one section of the lesser width may be in alignment with a bridge element of the plurality of bridge elements.

The nested Mach-Zehnder device may comprise one or more components to: determine a performance parameter associated with a constellation diagram generated by the nested Mach-Zehnder device; determine that the performance parameter does not satisfy a threshold, and cause a phase of at least one pre-stage interferometer, of the parent pre-stage interferometer, the first child pre-stage interferometer, or the second child pre-stage interferometer, to be electrically adjusted to cause the performance parameter to satisfy the threshold.

Abstract: An integrated and compact multifunctional optical isolator (i.e., a combined splitter, isolator, and spot-size converter), which is suitable for use in a TOSA, includes input optics including a first polarizer, a Faraday rotator, and a second polarizer. The input optics include a wedge having a partially reflective coating disposed on a first face thereof. The input beam is incident on the first face at a non-normal angle of incidence such light passing through the wedge is refracted to a second face of the wedge, which is tilted relative to the first face by a predetermined wedge angle. At least one of the non-normal angle of incidence and the predetermined wedge angle is determined dependence upon a refractive index of the wedge material and a target anamorphic magnification of the input beam of light.
