What is described herein are conditioning/styling tetrapolymers of vinyl caprolactam (VCL), vinylpyrrolidone (VP), dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide (DMAPMA) and C8-C24 alkyl quaternized dimethylaminopropyl (meth)acrylamide or methacrylic acid quaternized monomers (QDMAPMA), in a defined compositional range. Hair and skin care compositions which include these tetrapolymers exhibit advantageous low tackiness and high humidity resistance.

Suitably such polymers have a molecular weight in the range of 500 to 2500, and are made in a polymerization solvent, preferably a glycol ether, most preferably, 2-butoxyethanol; and also including a carrier solvent, preferably monoethylene glycol.

A process of making a cosmetically or pharmaceutically-acceptable emulsion or gel composition which comprises: (a) heating a reaction mixture comprising, by weight, about 5-70% of a vinyl monomer in about 30-95% of an oil as solvent, wherein said oil is selected from the group consisting of a silicone oil, a mineral oil and a water-insoluble organic ester and a free radical initiator, optionally in the presence of a crosslinking agent and/or an oil soluble surfactant, with agitation, under an inert gas, at about 40-150° C., wherein the oil is present in an amount sufficient to keep the resultant vinyl polymer in a stirrable state until the end of the polymerization, (b) adding a surfactant, if a suitable surfactant was not present during polymerization, and, (c) then adding water to form an oil-in-water, a water-in-oil or a water-in-oil-in-water emulsion or gel, in a volume ratio of oil-in-water of 30:70 to 10:90, or water-in-oil of 90:10 to 30:70.

Crosslinkable copolymers of (a) 80-99% by wt. vinylpyrrolidone (VP) and 1-20% by wt. of a tertiary-amine-containing polymerizable monomer, e.g. vinylimidazole (VI) or 4-vinylpyridine (VPy), and (b) 80-99% by wt. VP and 1-20% by wt. of an epoxide-containing polymerizable monomer, e.g. allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) or glycidyl acrylate (GA), are reacted in solution, e.g. water, alcohol, or mixtures thereof, at a predetermined temperature, e.g. 50.degree.-70.degree. C., in a wt. ratio (solids basis) of (a):(b) of about 2:1 to 1:2, preferably about 1:1, in a solution concentration of about 10-30% of each, to provide a crosslinked PVP product, in gel form, suitable for use as an electrolead on a conductive foilbacking, or for bandages and wound dressings, and as a controlled release media for pharmaceuticals.
