The holding units are arranged spaced out on an operating group for intermittent motion through work stations for inserting products into the boxes. The rear prong can be moved away from the leading prong by a catching pawl for introducing a box into the opened holding unit, at an inlet station, and for removing the box in a discharge station, situated downstream. This avoids rubbing between the prongs and the box walls that could damage the precious ornamental patterns applied to the box.
