This invention discloses processes and resulting products for the manufacture of metal heptonates from saccharides via a Kiliani-Fisher reaction and subsequent reaction with the desired metal. Manganese, iron, copper zinc and magnesium heptonates are each made by a slightly different process but the resulting metal chelates provide a soluble form of the metal for agricultural, industrial, environmental and construction uses. The amount of metal chelated is directly related to the percentage of fructose in the initial monosaccharide mixture. For cations with no color, the chelating agent can be decolorized with H.sub.2 O.sub.2 to give a lighter colored product providing the NH.sub.3 concentration is reduced below 0.35% prior to the decolorizing step. An equivalent strong oxidizing agent may be used instead of H.sub.2 O.sub.2.

The reagent's composition is primarily wet-process phosphoric acid to which has been added small quantities of nitric acid, copper, and optionally traces of several other substances. The reagent does not require expensive removal of the natural impurities found in wet-process phosphoric acid.

Solutions are prepared by dissolving N-(n-butyl)-thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) in one or more N-alkyl amino alcohols, N,N-dialkyl amino alcohols, N-alkyl-N-alkoxy amino alcohols, and mixtures thereof. The solutions may be used in urea fertilizers to reduce nitrogen volatilization, or to reduce the odor of animal waste. Methods of preparing urea fertilizers and the resultant products are also described.

Volatility-inhibited fertilizers are prepared by coating granular urea with a coating that includes a binding agent having a boron anion and a hydrogen bonding group to adhere the binding agent to the granular urea. The binding agent may be an amino alcohol borate in which the amino alcohol is selected from the group consisting of ethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, and mixtures thereof, or a borate of an amino alcohol complex of a divalent metal. The borates are preferably prepared as an aqueous solution of the amino alcohol and boric acid, or the amino alcohol, a divalent metal salt, and boric acid, with the aqueous solution being applied to the urea granules. Additional plant nutrients may also be coated onto the urea granules.
