The invention comprises siloxanes of the formula wherein X is a halogen atom or an alkoxy or hydroxyl radical and n is zero or an integer. The halogen-terminated siloxanes can be made by halogenating the corresponding H-containing siloxanes (which can be made by co-hydrolysis and condensation of [(CH3)3SiO]2Si(OCH3)2 and [(CH3)3SiO]2H.SiOCH3), and the hydroxylate and alkoxylated siloxanes can be obtained from the halogenated siloxanes by hydrolysis and alcoholysis respectively. Examples describe the preparation of {[CH3)3SiO]2XSi}2O, in which X is (1) Cl, (2, 3) -OH and (4) -OCH3, -OC2H5, -OCH(CH3)2 and -OC4H9; Example (5) describes the preparation of siloxanes of the above general formula in which n is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, 25, 50, 100 and 1500, and X is Cl, -OH, or alkoxy as specified in Example (4). The invention comprises siloxanes of the formulae and wherein X is H, Cl, OH or OR1 (R1=alkyl of 1 to 4 C atoms), R is methyl or phenyl, n is an integer of at least 1 and m is an integer of at least 2. Siloxanes (1) can be made, e.g. by cohydrolysing [(CH3)3SiO]2Si(OCH3)2 and H(CH3)2SiOCH3 or (C6H5)(CH3)HSiOCH3 and then co-condensing the hydrolysates, or preferably by reacting [(CH3)3SiO]4Si with (C6H5)(CH3)HSiCl or [(CH3)2HSi]2O in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. FeCl3 or a sulphonic acid ion-exchange resin. Siloxanes (2) can be made, e.g. by cohydrolysing (CH3)3SiOCH3 and [H(CH3)2SiO]2Si(OCH3)2 or [(C6H5)(CH3)HSiO]2 Si(OCH3)2 and then co-condensing the hydrolysates. These H-containing siloxanes may be chlorinated to yield the corresponding chlorine-containing siloxanes which in turn can be converted to the hydroxy- or alkoxy-containing siloxanes by hydrolysis or alcoholysis. Hydroxylated trimethylsiloxysiloxanes of the formula where n is an integer of at least 2, can be made by reacting completely trimethylsiloxylated siloxanes and AlCl3 in equimolecular amounts and hydrolysing the resulting product. Examples (1) and (3) describe this method of making siloxanes of the above formula wherein n is 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 100 and 1000. In Example (2) a special method of making a siloxane of the above formula when n is 3, comprises adding an aqueous slurry of natrolite to a mixture of ice, conc. HCl, isopropanol and hexamethyldisiloxane at room temperature, with subsequent filtration and separation and purification of the siloxane phase. Uses.-As liquid springs, hydraulic fluids, lubricants and heat transfer agents; and in forming protective films on glass, wood and metals.

THE BLOCK COPOLYMERS ARE PRESENT IN AMOUNTS OF 15 TO 150 PARTS BY WEIGHT PER 100 PARTS BY WEIGHT OF THE ORGANOSILOXANE GUM. THESE BLENDS WHEN CURED TO ELASTOMERS HAVE IMPROVED PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OVER THE CURED UNFILLED ORGANOSILOXANE GUMS. THESE BLENDS CURE TO USEFUL ELASTOMERS.

These may be prepared by reacting (CH3)2SiCl2 or a chlorine end-blocked dimethyl siloxane Cl(CH3)2Si-[OSi(CH3)2]x- 1-Cl, with either A3SiOH to yield compounds (a), or A3OSiA2OH to yield compounds (b). Analogous reactants containing hydroxy, acyloxy or alkoxy radicals in place of chlorine atoms may also be used. The examples describe the preparation of compounds of formula (a) wherein x is 1, 2, 3 and 4, and of compounds of formula (b) wherein x is 1 and 2; Example 1 describes the preparation of the starting material A3Si-O-Si(A)2OH by the partial hydrolysis of A3SiOH, wherein A is as defined above.
