Novel alkoxysilane cluster compounds are described having the formula: ##STR1## wherein n is an integer from 0 to 300; R is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl or --OSi(OR').sub.3 ; each R' is independently selected from alkyl, alkenyl, aryl or aralkyl with the proviso that at least a majority of R' radicals are sterically hindered alkyl groups having at least 3 carbon atoms; and R" and R'" are independently selected from hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, hydroalkyl, and halo or cyano substituted alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, and hydroalkyl. The preparation and use of these alkoxysilane cluster compounds also are described.

Disclosed are selected 4-hydroxyphenyl anilino alkoxysilanes of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or a lower alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and each R' is individually selected from an alkyl group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms with the proviso that at least a majority of said R' radicals are sterically hindered alkyl groups. The compounds are disclosed to be effective antioxidants, especially in functional fluids having shielded polysilicate compounds, silicate esters, or silicone oils as base fluids.

The invention comprises siloxanes of the formula wherein X is a halogen atom or an alkoxy or hydroxyl radical and n is zero or an integer. The halogen-terminated siloxanes can be made by halogenating the corresponding H-containing siloxanes (which can be made by co-hydrolysis and condensation of [(CH3)3SiO]2Si(OCH3)2 and [(CH3)3SiO]2H.SiOCH3), and the hydroxylate and alkoxylated siloxanes can be obtained from the halogenated siloxanes by hydrolysis and alcoholysis respectively. Examples describe the preparation of {[CH3)3SiO]2XSi}2O, in which X is (1) Cl, (2, 3) -OH and (4) -OCH3, -OC2H5, -OCH(CH3)2 and -OC4H9; Example (5) describes the preparation of siloxanes of the above general formula in which n is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, 25, 50, 100 and 1500, and X is Cl, -OH, or alkoxy as specified in Example (4). An improved method is disclosed for preparing alkoxysilane cluster compounds having the formula:RSi[OSi(OR').sub.3 ].sub.3wherein R is hydrogen, an alkyl, alkenyl, aryl or aralkyl group and each R' is independently selected from alkyl, alkenyl, aryl and aralkyl with the proviso that at least a majority of the R' radicals are sterically hindered alkyl groups having at least 3 carbon atoms. The improved preparation method involves reacting a substituted trihalosilane with a trialkoxysilanol in the presence of a critical amount of an acceptor base in a solvent reaction medium while maintaining the reactor temperature within a select range.
