Abstract: A glass substrate support system includes a first and second vacuum members extending lengthwise in a glass substrate feed direction along opposing edges of a flexible glass substrate. Each vacuum member has a vacuum body including a pressure chamber located therein and a support surface having a vacuum opening extending therethrough and in communication with the pressure chamber. A support rod assembly is provided that includes a plurality of support rods located between the first second vacuum members in the glass substrate feed direction. The support rod assembly has an out-of-plane configuration that supports the flexible glass substrate in a downward arc orientation.

Abstract: Methods for making a glass article include etching the surfaces of the glass article with an etchant solution that includes hydrofluoric acid to produce an etched glass article. The glass article being a high index glass containing transition metal oxides and having an index of refraction greater than or equal to about 1.6 at 589.3 nm wavelength. The surface having surface and subsurface defects. The etching improves a surface strength of the surfaces of the etched glass article by removing or rounding the surface and subsurface defects, and the etching causes deposition of transition metal fluorides. The methods include cleaning the surfaces of the etched glass article with a cleaning solution having a pH of greater than or equal to about 10 to remove transition metal fluorides from the surfaces of the etched glass article.

The clad CTE is less than the core CTE such that each of the first (104) and second (106) cladding layers is under a compressive stress and the core layer (102) is under a tensile stress. A flexural strength of the glass article (100) can be at least about 75 MPa. A peak load sustainable by the glass article (100) in a modified ring-on-ring test can be at most 96.5% less than a peak load sustainable by a reference glass article in the modified ring-on-ring test.

Abstract: A glass article (100) includes a core layer (102) formed from a core glass composition with a core coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and first (104) and second (106) cladding layers fused to first and second major surfaces of the core layer (102) and formed from a clad glass composition comprising a clad CTE. Abstract: A method for finishing an edge of a glass sheet comprises grinding the edge of the glass sheet with a grinding wheel. The glass sheet includes a first major surface, a second major surface substantially parallel to the first major surface, and the edge connecting the first and second major surfaces. The grinding produces a central edge portion and two chamfered edge portions connecting the central edge portion with the first and second major surfaces, respectively. The method further comprises polishing the central edge portion with at least one cup wheel rotated about a first axis substantially parallel with the first and second major surfaces of the glass sheet to polish the central edge portion, wherein an abrasive layer of the cup wheel comprises at least one of ferric oxide (Fe2O3), silicon carbide (SiC), and ceric oxide (CeO2).
