摘要:
A muffler for raising the audible pitch of an internal combustion engine's exhaust note that includes an enclosed case having an inlet and an outlet, and a plurality of flow-directing components which are adapted to subdivide an inlet flow into a plurality of discrete interior flows, including a first interior flow providing the shortest flow length through the muffler between the inlet and the outlet, a second interior flow having a flow length at least about twice the length of the first interior flow, and one or more intermediate flows following by-pass passages to split off from the second interior flow between the inlet and the outlet and having flow lengths between the flow lengths of the first and second flows.

A muffler for reducing acoustic noise contained in a gas flow, such as created by internal combustion engines, air compressors, and blower manifolds. The muffler consists of a conventional sheet metal casing which has an inlet and an outlet at opposite ends thereof. A flow of gas containing acoustic noise flows from inlet to outlet. A plurality of spiral acoustic traps, each of which extend from bottom to top of the casing, have a central axis positioned perpendicular to the gas flow. An opening in each spiral acoustic trap extends into the gas flow to divert some gas into the trap, wherein the gas flows in a circular path so as to degrade and randomize the sound waves into heat, by utilizing a circular mixing process with increased gas retention time. Gas is drawn out of the acoustic trap through a series of vent holes in the acoustic trap on the back side of the acoustic trap opposite the opening, by utilizing a venturi effect created by part of the inlet gas flow which is split off into a peripheral gas flow to flow around the acoustic trap through a constricted area just ahead of the vent holes, created by the acoustic trap and the adjacent casing wall or adjacent trap, so as to create a low pressure zone at the vent holes to continuously draw gas out of the acoustic trap. The acoustic traps may be oriented in a single or multiple linearly extending staggered groups, with in-line or offset inlets and outlets.

A muffler for attenuating acoustic noise in a gas flow that includes a casing having a substantially-rectangular cross-section with an inlet opening in an inlet end and an outlet opening in an outlet end, so that a gas flow containing acoustic noise passes from the inlet opening to the outlet opening. The muffler also includes a V-shaped sound diffuser disposed within the casing and spanning the distance between opposing top and bottom walls of the casing. The sound diffuser comprises a pair of elongate leg plates having base ends attached to the outlet end on opposite sides of the outlet opening, and tip ends merged into an apex that is aligned with the inlet opening. Each leg plate has a plurality of apertures formed therein, and the apex splits the inlet gas flow into two side flows, with each side flow passing through the plurality of apertures in one of the leg plates to reach the outlet opening.

The muffler also includes an acoustic trap disposed within the casing and which spans the distance between opposing top and bottom walls of the casing. The acoustic trap further comprises a first arcuate deflector having a concave frontside surface configured to direct the gas flow from the inlet through a first segment of an expanding spiral revolution, and one or more second arcuate deflectors which are radially offset from the first arcuate deflector and configured to direct a portion of the inlet gas flow through a remainder segment of the expanding spiral revolution.

A method of construction for flattened single or dual inlet boom tube exhaust pipes from sheet metal for use on race cars, such as stock cars which race on oval tracks. The construction of the boom tube exhaust pipes comprise single or dual slightly flattened circular inlets which lead exhaust gasses into a flattened profile body constructed of formed sheet metal half shells, with the inlets at or above the lower plane of the body. One or more formed sheet metal structural ribs extend through the body and into the inlets and one or more spacer ribs support the half shells within the body.

A bolt-on apparatus for conveniently modifying the camber curves of double wishbone suspensions on motor vehicles, for increased cornering performance includes an adaptive spacer to increase the distance between the upper and lower ball joint pivots of the wishbone control arms. The increased distance between the ball joint pivots changes the camber curve and reverses the position of the instant center point, about which the tires laterally pivot, or lean, at any given instant. This allows the tires to lean in the proper direction to maintain contact with the surface of the road while the vehicle frame rolls toward the outside of the turn resulting in improved tire wear and cornering traction.

A Y-pipe splitter for use on race cars, such as stock cars which race on oval tracks and sports cars which race on road course tracks, mounts to the lower frame or chassis of the car, and routes exhaust gasses from a Y-pipe assembly to a pair of tail pipes extending to the side of the car while providing improved ground clearance. The Y-pipe splitter includes first and second splitter tail pipe sections of a generally flattened oval cross-section with a longitudinally beveled inlet portions connectable to an outlet of the Y-pipe assembly and an outlet portion connectable to one of the tail pipes. The beveled inlet portions of the splitter tail pipe sections are affixed together along a respective edge of each thereof so as to merge together with respective centerlines thereof at an oblique angle to a single inlet opening which is connectable to the outlet opening of the Y-pipe assembly by affixing thereto.

An exhaust collector system for discharging a flow of exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine. The exhaust collector system includes a plurality of primary headers having their discharge portions merged together at a merge angle into a substantially oval or obround-shaped manifold outlet, and a substantially-round secondary pipe having a pipe inlet with a diameter greater than the diameter of the primary headers. The exhaust collector system also includes an oval-to-round collector flowtube which has a substantially oval- or obround-shaped collector inlet that is coupled with the manifold outlet and a substantially-round collector outlet that is coupled with the pipe inlet. The collector flowtube has a constant circumference along its entire length and a transverse cross-sectional area that continuously increases from the collector inlet to the collector outlet to cause a continuous expansion of the flow of exhaust gases.
