Abstract:
A hybrid material includes a protein matrix and nanoparticles (NPs) of a type of Cu; a preparation method thereof; and the uses thereof. The hybrid material displays activity that inhibits SARS-CoV-2 proteins, which makes it usable as a biocidal agent and as an agent for coating and disinfecting materials selected from metal, paper, textiles and approved surgical face masks.
Abstract:
The present invention generally relates to inhibitors of α-synuclein aggregation which are characterized by comprising an amphipathic α-helical peptide. The invention further relates to therapeutic and diagnostic uses of such inhibitors as well as corresponding plasmonic sensors, kits, and pharmaceutical compositions.
Abstract:
A method is disclosed for obtaining an image biomarker that quantifies the quality of the trabecular structure of bones. The method includes: retrieving high-resolution CT (Computed Tomography) and/or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) trabecular images from an image database; pre-processing and post-processing the high-resolution CT and/or MRI trabecular images and obtaining the unique image biomarker “QTS”. Pre-processing may include: calculating the region of interest “ROI”; calculating the bone fraction map; eliminating the partial volume effect; and, binarizing. Post-processing may include: skeletonisation and extraction of morphological and structural characteristics. Lastly, the unique image biomarker “QTS” is defined as: QTS=0.7137*Comp1+0.2863*Comp2.
Abstract:
The disclosure relates to variable power modular electronic systems for generating unipolar and bipolar electrical pulses and associated uses thereof. In an embodiment, such a system includes one or more pulse generators for generating electrical pulses that can be connected in series; a charging circuit for charging the pulse generators; and a controller communicatively coupled to the pulse generators and the charging circuit. Advantageously, each pulse generator may include an AC/DC rectifier and a DC/AC inverter connected to said AC/DC rectifier in a bridge configuration to generate bipolar output electrical pulses or pulse trains. In addition, the charging circuit may include a DC/DC step-up converter connected to an indirect DC/AC inverter. The system provided in various embodiments of the disclosure also provides a great versatility for adaptation to various applications and high output voltage and current values.

Abstract:
A system and a method for recovery and recycling of gases which are utilized in their liquid state as refrigerants in applications that require low temperatures, throughout various pressure ranges, from slightly above atmospheric pressures to pressures near the critical point for the particular gas. The system and method are based on closed-cycle cryocoolers and utilize the thermodynamic properties of the gas to achieve optimal liquefaction rates.
Abstract:
The present invention discloses a biosensor for visual detection of an analyte, based on the light to heat conversion properties of metal nanoparticles: the analyte is visually detected by the color change in the support areas (where the analyte is present), produced as a result of the heat generated by the metal nanoparticles where they are irradiated with an external light source. Use of said biosensor in a method for the detection of analytes is also claimed.
Abstract:
The invention provides methods and means for the inhibition or neutralisation of death receptor/death ligand members of the tumour necrosis factor superfamil and TNF receptor superfamilies and/or the Toll-like receptor family, and/or NOD-like receptor and/or of the signalling induced via these receptors, preferably in combination with each other and/or with anti-inflammatory agents, in treating diseases such as Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), such as that caused by airway-targeting viruses, such as SARS coronaviruses.

The present invention refers to a freeze-dried composition consisting of an isolated microorganism belonging to the Mycobacterium tuberucolosis complex, preferably a M. tuberculos clinical isolate, more preferably M. tuberculosis clinical isolate, characterized in that it comprises a PhoP− phenotype by the inactivation by a genetic deletion of the Rv0757 gene and the deletion of a second gene, Rv2930 (fadD26), that prevents PDIM production (PDIM− phenotype) (the MTBVAC strain), and sucrose and sodium glutamate as stabilizers or excipients. The present invention further refers to the reconstituted composition obtained by adding water, preferably sterilized water for injection, to the freeze-dried composition as well as uses thereof, in particular for use as a prophylactic agent to those at risk of infection with M. tuberulosis or those at risk of developing tuberculosis disease, or as secondary agents for treating infected tuberculosis patients.
