It is intended to provide an exhaust gas treatment system, which allows for VOC removal at lower temperatures and thereby improves the durability of catalysts and suppresses carbon monoxide generation at the final outlet of the system. The present invention provides a treatment system of an exhaust gas containing a nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, and a volatile organic compound comprising: an exhaust gas treatment means for removing the nitrogen oxide by reduction with ammonia and partially oxidizing the VOC to CO; and a CO/VOC removal means for oxidizing the CO and partially unreacted VOC, in this order from the upstream flow of the exhaust gas.

A new method for denitration by ammonia of exhaust gas containing arsenic compounds which degrades a denitrating catalyst used is disclosed as well as a method and an apparatus, based on the same principle as the above method, for regenerating an already degraded catalyst. These effects are achieved, without taking the catalyst out of the system, by adjusting the humidity and temperature of the atmosphere surrounding the catalyst filled in the denitration reactor with simple and economical means so that arsenic compounds accumulated on the catalyst surface will diffuse into the catalyst reducing their concentration on the surface, which is important for the catalytic action.

An apparatus for treating a combustion exhaust gas is here provided which comprises a fire furnace, a denitrating reactor for denitrating the combustion exhaust gas discharged from the fire furnace, a dust collector for collecting solids in the exhaust gas passed through the reactor, and a transport pipe for circulating the solids collected by the dust collector through the fire furnace, the apparatus being characterized in that the transport pipe is provided with an arsenic removal means for removing arsenic from the solids. The arsenic removal means may be a heating device or a washing device. The dust collector may be provided with a means for discarding the solids having a particle diameter of 10 .mu.m or less.
