摘要: The rolling cone cutter of a rotary rock bit is held in place on the bearing pin without the use of the conventional ball bearings. The bit includes a body with a bearing pin extending from the body. A rolling cutter is adapted to be rotatably mounted on the bearing pin. A locking means locks the cutter on the bearing pin. The locking means includes a groove in either the roller cutter or the bearing pin. A flange-type retaining element positioned on the opposite member, either the rolling cutter or bearing pin, projects into the groove and retains the rolling cutter on the bearing pin.

摘要: The bearing capacity of a rotary rock bit is increased by providing a bearing separator and sealing system which maintains the cylindrical roller bearings in proper alignment without interfering with the integrity of the seal. A spacer unit is positioned around the bearing pin of the rock bit between the cutter member and the bearing pin. The spacer unit includes an annular body with a plurality of separator elements cantilevered from said annular body extending toward the outer end of the bearing pin. The cylindrical rollers are alternately positioned between the separator elements. The annular body of the spacer unit is located in the cone mouth of the cutter member. A seal member is located in the cone mouth of the cutter member between the rock bit body and the annular body of the spacer unit.

摘要: A sealing system for a rotary rock bit acts as a barrier to the pulverized cuttings and other materials in the borehole and prevents the materials from entering the bearing area through the cone mouth opening of the cone cutter. The bearing rollers are substantially captured in a groove machined into the cone cutter. This allows a seal unit to be located at a substantial distance from the hostile drilling environment and increases seal life. The shirttail portion of the bit body and the base of the cone cutter cooperate to retard materials in the borehole from contacting the seal unit. The sealing system is provided without reducing the bearing capacity of the bit's bearing system.

摘要: The bearing capacity of a rotary rock bit is increased even though the total number of rollers in the roller bearing system is actually reduced. A multiplicity of individual separator elements and a multiplicity of cylindrical rollers are positioned around the bearing pin of the rotary rock bit, between the bearing pin and the cutter member. The separator elements are alternatively positioned between cylindrical rollers. The separator elements assist in maintaining the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical rollers substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bearing pin and provide a material for the rollers to slide against that is more compatible with the rollers than when the rollers are sliding against each other.

摘要: The roller bearing capacity of a rotary rock bit is increased even though the total number of rollers in the roller bearing system is reduced. Two halves of a split ring bearing cage are positioned around the bearing pin of a rotary rock bit between the bearing pin and the cutter member. The split ring bearing cage includes cantilevered separator elements that extend from the body of the cage on the bearing pin toward the body of the bit. The separator elements are alternatively positioned between cylindrical rollers and act to maintain the rollers in a position to receive the maximum stress imposed on the roller bearing system. The cantilevered separator elements provide a material for the rollers to slide against that is more compatible with the rollers than when the rollers are sliding against each other.
