摘要:
High strength, light weight composite material, comprising discrete reinforcing elements surrounded by a matrix including polymer micro-bits that are substantially free of the intact cells of the expanded, hydrophobic, thermoplastic polymers from which they are produced, is prepared by hot pressing paper-like elements made using paper making technology.

A high temperature filter material, comprising a non-woven glass fiber matrix including mica particles, polymer micro-bits and a uniformly distributed binder system, is made by a wet laid procedure, as used in paper-making. A composition comprising the mica particles and polymer micro-bits, used in making the filter material, and a method of preparing the composition are also disclosed.

A filter apparatus for air handling systems in which the air inlet grille of the system is provided with an additional filtration medium which extends across the full flow passage area of the grille. In the preferred form of the invention, the filter medium is in the form of a flexible sheet material wrapped on a hollow core shell which is housed in a storage enclosure along side the grille. The sheet filter medium is drawn out from the storage chamber through a discharge slot across the full length of the grille, and suitable guide means is provided to assure proper positioning of the filter medium to cover the entire flow passage area of the grille. The mounting of the roll in the storage chamber is such as to provide a frictional engagement which permits the roll to rotate to pay off the filter medium, but with sufficient friction to avoid overrunning. The filter medium is preferably one of those disclosed in U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,239,516 and 4,239,278.
摘要:
A water treatment system for removing turbidity-causing impurities from water which involves contacting water containing such impurities with a relatively small amount of filter aid material, e.g., diatomaceous earth, for a time sufficient for impurities in the water to become adsorbed on said filter aid material, passing the water containing the filter aid material with impurities adsorbed thereon through a pre-filter having a flow rate of two liters/min./sq. m., or greater, and thereafter through a filter medium in the form of a porous, non-woven matrix consisting essentially of randomly arranged, irregularly intersecting and overlapping cellulose fibers intermixed with micro-bits of an expanded thermoplastic styrene-polymer or lower polyolefin, or of a flexible foamed polyurethane. The filter medium also includes one or more additional materials from the group of a fibrous wet web strengthening agent, a wet web support releasing agent a wet-strength enhancing agent and an adsorption agent selected from finely divided activated carbon, diatomaceous earth, colloidal alumina monohydrate and ion exchange resin.

Filtration apparatus in which the filter medium is in the form of a mat assembled with a support grid which is caused to traverse through a filter chamber in a zig zag path. The mat and support grid extend between the side walls of the filter chamber and are advanced by turning rolls disposed at upper and lower levels. The support grid for the filter mat extends between sealing flanges projecting from the side walls of the filter chamber and auxiliary support for the support grid may be provided by employing a foraminous shelf extending between the flanges. The filter medium is disposed so that its edges overlie the sealing flanges, thereby preventing flow of gaseous medium around the edges of the filter mat. Sealing engagement between the sealing flanges and the filter mat is assured by the inclusion of a series of apertures spaced along the length of the flanges. The undersurface of the filter mat faces the downstream side of the filter housing so that the reduced pressure downstream of the filter mat is applied to the undersurface of the filter mat and effects firm engagement with the flanges.

Involved are (I) expanded, thermoplastic, non-brittle as expanded polymers selected from a styrene-polymer and a polyolefin from polyethylene to poly-methylpentene, said expanded polymer being in form of micro-bits which (a) are from about 40 to about 325 microns long and from about 20 to about 325 microns wide, (b) are substantially completely to entirely completely free (i) of intact cells of expanded polymer bit-pieces from which they were produced and of (ii) any uniformity in outline of individual micro-bit particles, and (c) in density are from about 85 percent of, to about substantially the same as, the specific unexpanded polymer from which there was provided the aforesaid expanded polymer, and (II) a method of preparing these micro-bits by impelling a mixture of them in water in a confined comminuting zone through a circular path by repeated impact by a plurality of impact surfaces spaced axially and radially at apart from one another and rotated about the circular path's axis from about 4700 to about 8000 r.p.m. thereby driving the bit-pieces against cornered edges of a plurality of from circular to substantially rectangular orifices arranged in screening array in an arcuate plane, thus repeatedly tearing, ripping and shearing the desired micro-bits from bit-pieces of the starting expanded polymer.

Methods for producing expandable discrete styrene-polymer bit-pieces impregnated with a liquid aliphatic impregnant which volatizes below said polymer's softening point are disclosed. Specifically, the disclosed methods include mixing a quantity of the styrene-polymer bit-pieces in an aqueous solution with a sufficient quantity of the aliphatic impregnant to provide the planned extent of impregnation and a quantity of a compatible water-soluble emulsifying agent sufficient to emulsify that quantity of impregnant in the aqueous solution. Furthermore, methods for producing such expandable discrete sytrene-polymer bit-pieces including mixing the bit-pieces with the required amount of aliphatic impregnant in a hermetically sealed impregnant chamber free of moving parts, and rotating the sealed impregnator at a speed sufficient to maintain the bit-pieces in agitation while heating the aqueous solution by indirect heat exchange are also disclosed. In addition, the improved styrene-polymer bit-pieces produced by this method are also disclosed, having extended shelf lives, improved densities, and substantially uniformly-sized mixed pentagonal and hexagonal cells.
