    Abstract: As coal is heated to produce coke and coke oven gas the coke is delivered to a reactor where a bed of it is maintained. Most of the tar and ammonia and oil are removed from the coke oven gas and then the gas is passed through the coke bed. A tar plant receives the tar removed from the gas and produces coal tar pitch, which is delivered with calcium carbonate to the reactor to desulfurize the coke and gas therein and enriches the gas. The desulfurized gas is continuously removed from the reactor and cooled. Periodically a batch of desulfurized coke is withdrawn from the reactor. Steam is produced in cooling the coke and is used in heating an ammonia still. Water from the still is processed and used in an ammonia scrubber along with make-up water produced by condensing water vapor from the coke oven combustion gas. Only nonpolluting products leave the system. The rest are consumed or recirculated in it.

    Abstract: An internal combustion engine system is provided with a liquid oxygen tank and means for gasifying liquid oxygen leaving the tank and for conducting the gas to the inlet ports of the engine cylinders. A predetermined percentage of exhaust gases from the cylinders is conducted back to mix with the oxygen gas before it reaches the cylinders. Fuel from a tank iss delivered to said mixture. The system does not have any air intake but relies on oxygen from the liquid oxygen tank as the oxidizer for the fuel, thereby avoiding production of carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide and other noxious exhaust gases.

    Abstract: Oxygen is delivered to a gas producer to gasify coal to produce fuel which is then delivered with more oxygen to a boiler furnace to generate steam and to form products of combustion that include water vapor and carbon dioxide. The water vapor is condensed and separated from the carbon dioxide. The steam is conducted to a steam turbine at a rate that enables it to operate the plant at substantially full capacity continuously. The turbine drives an electric generator. During periods of reduced load, surplus power from the plant is used for liquefying some of the separated carbon dioxide. Some of the surplus power also is used for operating air separation apparatus, to which the liquefied carbon dioxide is conducted to aid in producing liquid oxygen in excess of the oxygen requirements of the gas producer and furnace during the reduced load period. The surplus liquid oxygen is stored for use, after warming, in the plant between the periods of reduced load when the air separation apparatus is not operating.
