3,3-Dimethylbutanal is prepared from 3,3-dimethylbutanol. Intermediate 3,3-dimethylbutanol is obtained by reacting ethylene, isopropylene and a mineral acid to produce a 3,3-dimethylbutyl ester which is hydrolyzed to the alcohol. The hydrolysis step is effectively carried out by reactive distillation. Alternatively, 3,3-dimethylbutanal is prepared from 3,3-dimethylbutanol obtained by reduction of the corresponding carboxylic acid or 1,2-epoxy-3,3-dimethylbutane, or by hydrolysis of 1-halo-3,3-dimethylbutane. Fixed bed gas phase and stirred tank liquid phase processes are provided for converting 3,3-dimethylbutanol to 3,3-dimethylbutanal by catalytic dehydrogenation.

An activated porous phosphorus/vanadium oxide catalyst adapted for the catalytic oxidation of a hydrocarbon to produce a carboxylic acid anhydride. The catalyst comprises shaped bodies having a B.E.T. surface area of at least about 15 m.sup.2 /g, an average vanadium oxidation state of between about 4.0 and about 4.5, a total pore volume of at least about 0.15 cc/g, a normalized apparent shaped body density of between about 1.25 and about 2.0 g/cc, and a crush strength of at least about 4 pounds. At least about 5% of the pore volume of the catalyst is constituted of pores having a diameter of at least about 0.8 microns, and at least about 4% of the pore volume is constituted of pores having a diameter of at least about 10 microns. The catalyst is prepared by mixing a particulate phosphorus/vanadium oxide precursor with a pore modification agent to produce a modified catalyst precursor composition, forming the modified precursor composition into a predetermined shape, and removing the pore modification agent substantially at a temperature below 300.degree. C.

Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for carrying out and studying catalysis and catalyzed chemical reactions. Disclosed is a reactor with a catalyst zone, under vacuum, into which a very rapid pulse of reactant gas is pulsed. The products are analyzed by a real-time method of analysis, such as mass spectrometry. The apparatus and method can detect reaction intermediates and products, and can indicate their sequence of production.

A process for oxidation and ammoxidation of hydrocarbons using catalysts having the empirical formulaBiMo.sub.a V.sub.b Sb.sub.c O.sub.xwherein a is from 0.5-2, b is from 0.12-3, c is from 0.12 to 10, d is 0-0.5 and x is selected to satisfy the valence requirements of the other elements present. M is one or more elements selected from Groups I-A, II-A, III-A, V-A, VI-A, I-B, IV-B, VI-B and VII-B of the Periodic Table. The catalyst is prepared by forming a slurry of vanadium antimonate component, a bismuth molybdate component, and optionally the compound M and/or a support material, drying the slurry, and calcining to form the catalyst. The process is useful for production of acrylonitrile from propylene, ammonia, and an oxygen-containing gas.

Carboxylic acid salts are prepared by the dehydrogenation of a primary alcohol in the presence of a catalyst comprising a finely divided anchor metal partially embedded on a support and having at least some of the nonembedded surface coated with an electroless plating of a catalytically active metal. The anchor metal is selected from a group consisting of osmium, iridium, rhodium and mixtures thereof.

In a process for converting an aromatic compound such as benzene into its hydroxylated derivative, generation of carbon monoxide during catalyst regeneration is reduced if the catalyst is a zeolite that contains ruthenium, rhodium, platinum, palladium, or irridium.
摘要:
A process for preparing N-hydroxyalkylaminomethyl-phosphonic acid or salts thereof which comprises contacting an alkanolamine, formaldehyde and a trialkyl phosphite under suitable reaction conditions to produce a reaction mixture, and hydrolyzing the reaction mixture under neutral, acidic or basic conditions. In one embodiment, the N-hydroxyalkylaminomethylphosphonic acid or salts thereof is catalytically oxidized to produce an N-phosphonomethylaminocarboxylic acid or salts thereof.
