A space-borne imaging system with a paraboloid mirror fabricated in space is described. The mirror is formed by solidifying liquid precursor material after its surface assumes a paraboloid shape as a result of compound rotation of the satellite. The mirror is preferably formed from a photopolymer which creates a rigid paraboloid mirror surface upon exposure to a cross-linking radiation source. Optical coating(s) deposition system is described as well. Several deployable satellite structures, including mirror support are executed in shape memory materials and are deployed by application of heat. Mirror material support is executed as a pliable membrane compactly stowable for launch. Prior to mirror generation the support is optionally stiffened by crosslinking an impregnating it polymer or depositing a base layer of polymer ahead of the main polymer charge.

The present invention provides a positive identification of each ECG lead (12,16), both visually under varying illumination conditions as well as by touch only, including identification with gloved hands.In addition, in several embodiments (20, 24) the lead anthropomorphic shape unambiguously indicates the lead placement on patient's body.This construction and features of the present invention enable fast and accurate identification of the ECG leads and ensure their correct placement on the patient's body.

A portable non-contact tonometer (2) for measuring Intra-Ocular Pressure (IOP) of subject's eye is presented. Tonometer (2) is designed to be operated by the subject himself. It is housed in a hand-held case (4) which contains compressed air source (40), eye alignment detectors (12, 14), cornea applanation detector system (8, 10), a pressure sensor (32) and optical system for presenting gaze target (48). The animated gaze target (48) advantageously draws subject's attention to itself and keeps his eye (62) in alignment long enough for the measurement to take place, while optionally displaying system status and operating instructions. An audio annunciation system (16) guides the subject in the operation of the tonometer and prepares him for the actual procedure. The timing of the air puff is randomized to prevent subject's conditioning. The overall operation of the tonometer is controlled by a built-in microprocessor (50) system. A 3-D map of cornea is computed and a technique to compute the IOP derived from the difference of 3-D corneal maps before and during the air puff application is disclosed.

An electrical method and apparatus for sensing the pattern of ridges and valleys on an individual's finger to provide binary electrical signals representative of the sensed pattern. The fingerprint sensor is constructed and defined with an integrated circuit chip having an array of sensing circuits arranged thereon in rows and columns for defining X, Y coordinates. One of the electrodes for each sensing circuit is connected to a contact pad that is electrically exposed on the surface of the integrated circuit chip at a location corresponding to the X, Y coordinate for the individual sensing circuit. A pressure sensitive membrane having a conductive surface facing the array of contact pads is utilized for translating the fingerprint pattern into a conductive pattern of ridges and valleys. The conductive pattern is pressed into electrical engagement with each contact pad opposite a fingerprint ridge. While the conductive pads are in electrical engagement with the membrane, the sensing circuits are sequentially scanned in a preselected timed relationship to produce a binary electrical signal from each sensing circuit having its individual contact pad in circuit relationship with the membrane. The output signals from the rows and columns of sensing signals represent the portion of the fingerprint pattern representative of a ridge. The binary output signals can be processed by known techniques for comparing the sensed fingerprint with known fingerprint patterns.

The primary mirror is formed by solidifying liquid precursor material which assumes a paraboloid shape upon certain rotational maneuvers of the satellite. The primary mirror is preferably formed from a molten metal which creates a rigid paraboloid primary mirror upon solidification. The mirror material can be pre-melted prior to launch and carried to orbit while liquid, or it can be stored as a solid and melted in space to create the mirror.

Several embodiments of a battlefield defibrillation system (2) comprising external defibrillator (6) and at least one electrode (8) connected thereto are described. The system includes direct cardiac access (8), or indirect subcutaneous electrodes (30). The direct cardiac access electrodes (26) engage the heart muscle directly via the intercostal space. Indirect subcutaneous electrodes are positioned under patient's skin. Several design features are implemented to aid precise electrode positioning and facilitate system operation by an untrained personnel.

The spoken words are recognized and indexed to their respective analogs which are used to tailor the speech sequence to conform to a pre-determined standard of speech characteristics which could be fixed for a given language or chosen based on the regional characteristics of the said common language target for a communication session. Thusly selected audio sequences are then tailored or synthesized into the normalized characteristics and inserted into the outgoing speech stream such that the resulting audio sequence exhibits reduced speech characteristics deemed undesirable.
