Abstract: A process for producing a manganese bismuthide layer on a substrate in which manganese and bismuth are vacuum deposited upon a substrate using high performance vacuum apparatus. The deposited materials are enclosed by an air impervious layer produced by a second vacuum depositioning stage using less sophisticated vacuum apparatus. The manganese and bismuth are then converted to manganese bismuthide by heat treatment which latter, because of the impervious layer, can be carried out in air.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a component of a magnetic transducing head is disclosed in which ferrite strips are spaced apart by a non-magnetic gap and are then surrounded by a non-magnetic material. The resulting structure is divided into slices each of which contains a pair of ferrite portions with a predetermined gap between them. The slice may be profiled on one face for cooperation with a record disc and a yoke secured to the other face to complete the magnetic circuit.

Abstract: A train printer cartridge and print slug arrangement having a closed loop guide track for non inter connected print slugs freely slidable in the guide track and each having a single drive tooth on each side of the slug, the teeth meshing with notched drive wheels. Abstract: Apparatus is described for displaying, on a display device having a number of spatially separated indicating positions such as a television monitor screen or a matrix of display lamps, the states of a number of elements, each elemental state being primarily indicated by signals applied over one of a number of indicating lines. The lines are connected to display converter modules which are arranged to scan the lines in sequence to produce a composite output signal which is applied to the display device. Where the number of lines is large, the serialisation of the line states may be done in stages, the first stage being the derivation of a separate composite signal from each of a number of groups of lines. The second stage then consists of deriving a final output signal by scanning the first-stage composite signals in turn. The disclosure also deals with the use of similar converter modules for performing both the first stage and the second stage scans. It is also shown that the timing and synchronising signals needed to control the scanning and the distribution of the output signals to the display device may also be provided by similar converter modules.

Abstract: In a document feeding apparatus which separates an edge of a document from a stack prior to feeding the separated document, a document thickness sensing device is employed to detect whether more than one document edge has been separated or whether there has been a failure to separate an edge. The sensing device consists of a finger which is moved over the separated part of a document as it lies on a reference surface. The finger carries a magnetic insert which is magnetically coupled to an inductor so that the displacement of the finger alters the inductance of the inductor.

Abstract: A moving coil linear motor is described having an annular nonmagnetic gap defined by an annular permanent magnet and a pair of pole pieces on the magnet, one pole piece having a circular aperture therethrough, the center of which is coaxial with the annular magnet. A hollow tubular coil is movably situated in the annular gap and coaxial therewith. One or both pole pieces have attached thereto a layer of material positioned in the annular gap, the material having a high electrical conductivity in a circumferential direction to provide a closed electrical path coaxial with the coil and having a high magnetic permeability in a radial direction.
