Abstract:
A pressure tap probe having a flexible probe tip that is flexible enough to seal a film cooling hole having a roughened surface such as a TBC applied around the hole. The flexible probe tip is flexible enough to deform around the film cooling hole such that an accurate pressure reading can be observed for the film cooling hole. The flexible pressure tap is used to measure the pressure at a plurality of film cooling holes on a turbine airfoil when a pressure and a flow rate of cooling air is passed through the airfoil. A plurality of film cooling holes are measured by using the flexible pressure tap to determine if the cooling passages and film cooling holes are properly sized to provide adequate cooling for the airfoil.
Abstract:
A bypass air valve for a gas turbine engine is provided which includes a liner, a strap, and means for selectively actuating the valve. The liner includes an inner radial surface, an outer radial surface, a plurality of first regions, and a plurality of second regions. Each first region includes a plurality of first apertures. Each second region includes a plurality of second apertures. The strap includes a plurality of openings and a plurality of third regions. Each third region includes a plurality of third apertures. The valve may be selectively actuated into an open or a closed position. In the open position, the first regions are substantially aligned with the openings and the third regions are substantially aligned with the second regions. In the closed position, the first regions are substantially aligned with the third regions and the second regions are substantially aligned with the openings.
Abstract:
The present invention includes a flexible device incorporating a magnet, and the method of manufacturing the device, wherein said device is used for holding an exercise towel against the metallic surfaces of fitness machines to promote the hygienic use of fitness towels. The device comprises an elongate strap having opposed and first and second end portions. An opening is provided in the first end portion for receiving a towel and a magnet is embedded within the second end portion for attaching the metallic surface of fitness machine. The invention includes a method for producing the device by using an open mold elongate cavity with a post attached to the base of the cavity of a first end of the elongate cavity for forming the opening in the device, and a metal post formed into the base of the second end of the cavity, the steps including: placing a magnet into the cavity at the second end, and positioning said magnet in proper location and orientation onto the top of said metallic post; filling said cavity with a liquid to cover the magnet in the second cavity end; and solidifying the liquid into a flexible material to form the device.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for cooling a wall within a gas turbine engine is provided which comprises the steps of: (1) providing a wall having an internal surface and an external surface; (2) providing a cooling microcircuit within the wall that has a passage for cooling air that extends between the internal surface and the external surface; and (3) increasing heat transfer from the wall to a fluid flow within the passage by increasing the average heat transfer coefficient per unit flow within the microcircuit. According to one aspect, the present invention method and apparatus can be tuned to substantially match the thermal profile of the wall at hand.
Abstract:
A cooling circuit is provided disposed between a first wall portion and a second wall portion of a wall for use in a gas turbine engine, one or more inlet apertures, and one or more exit apertures. The inlet aperture(s) provides a cooling airflow path into the cooling circuit and the exit aperture(s) provides a cooling airflow path out of the cooling circuit. The cooling circuit includes a plurality of first pedestals extending between the first wall portion and the second wall portion. The first pedestals are arranged in one or more rows.

Abstract:
An apparatus and method for cooling a wall for use in a gas turbine engine is provided that includes a cooling air passage having a plurality of segments connected in series by one or more chambers, an inlet aperture, and an exit aperture. The inlet aperture connects the cooling air passage to one side of the wall. The exit aperture connects the cooling air passage to the opposite side of the wall. Cooling air on the inlet aperture side of the wall enters the cooling air passage through the inlet aperture and exits through the exit aperture.
