A candle holder comprises a housing for securing a candle; the housing including first thermochromic material formed on the housing and second thermochromic material formed on the thermochromic material. The first thermochromic material changes a perceivable state of the first thermochromic material when an ambient temperature of first thermochromic material is above a first pre-determined activation temperature, the perceivable state of the first thermochromic material being visually perceivable or non-visually perceivable. The second thermochromic material changes a perceivable state of the second thermochromic material when an ambient temperature of second thermochromic material is above a second pre-determined activation temperature, the perceivable state of the second thermochromic material being visually perceivable or non-visually perceivable. The perceivable state of the first thermochromic material is different from the perceivable state of the second thermochromic material.

Embodiments of systems, methods, and computer-readable media for real-time winding analysis for knot detection are disclosed. For example, one embodiment of the present invention includes a method having the steps of receiving a first wrapping signal indicating a first wrapping of the simulated thread around a second tool to create a first loop. The method further includes determining a first wrapping direction based at least in part on the first wrapping signal; receiving a first tightening signal indicating a pulling of a first end of the simulated thread through the first loop; determining a first half-hitch based at least in part on the first winding direction and the first tightening signal; and outputting the first half-hitch. In another embodiment, a computer-readable media includes code for a carrying out such a method.

A method of processing ions in a quadrupole rod set us provided. The method comprises a) establishing and maintaining a two-dimensional substantially quadrupole field for processing the ions, the field having a quadrupole harmonic with amplitude A2 and a selected higher order harmonic with amplitude Am wherein m is an integer greater than 2, and the magnitude of Am is greater than 0.1% of the magnitude of A2; b)introducing the ions to the two-dimensional substantially quadrupole field and subjecting the ions to both the quadrupole harmonic and the higher order harmonic of the field to radially confine ions having Mathieu parameters a and q within a stability region defined in terms of the Mathieu parameters a and q; c) adding an auxiliary excitation field to transform the stability region into a plurality of smaller stability islands defined in terms of the Mathieu parameters a and q; and, d) adjusting the two-dimensional substantially quadrupole field to place ions within a selected range of mass-to-charge ratios within a selected stability island in the plurality of stability islands to impart stable trajectories to the selected ions within the selected range of mass-to-charge ratios for transmission through the rod set, and to impart unstable trajectories to unselected ions outside of the selected range of mass-to-charge ratios to filter out such ions.
Abstract:
A mass spectrometer and a method of operating and building same is provided in which a hexapole component is deliberately added to a substantially quadrupole field. This can result in unwanted octopole and dipole fields also being added to the substantially quadrupole field. Modifications to the mass spectrometer as well as ways of operating the mass spectrometer are provided for dealing with the unwanted octopole and dipole fields.
Abstract:
A system and method for detecting cheque fraud includes a cheque scanning module and a detection module. The cheque scanning module scans cheques and matches the encoded Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) data (i.e. serial number, Customer Account Number and amount) from the scanned digital electronic images with items in an issuance database which contains client provided cheque particulars. The detection module passes the cheque images through an optical character recognition (OCR) process to read what is written on the cheque and to match results against the issuance database. If the written information on the face of a cheque is unreadable or there is no match with the information in the issuance database, the detection module passes the cheque through a series of slower more precise OCR processes. Any cheques that are not successfully read and matched are highlighted as an “exception” and immediately forwarded to the client for further action.

Abstract:
Musical instruments have been covered in ornamentation since the beginning of time. Often, the designs shown on an instrument are an integral part of the performance. However, playing the instrument creates wear. Some wear on the instrument may he desirable, to authenticate that the instrument was used during a performance. However, wear on the back of the instrument may interfere with the functionality of the instrument. For example, wear on the front of a guitar from picking shows authenticity, but scratches on the hack of the guitar may interfere with the resonance chamber. This problem of balancing wear and preservation is a difficult balance to strike. What is needed is a protective attachment that preserves the functionality of the instrument, but allows it to age and demonstrate authenticity.
Abstract:
Pigmented polymer compositions and processes for preparing melt-processible polymer compositions contain a melt-processible polymer, surface treated organic pigment, typically titanium dioxide, and a polymer processing aid are described. The pigment is surface treated by contact with a silicon-containing compound, such as octyltriethoxysilane followed by contact with an organic compound such as isostearic acid or ethoxylated silicone. The pigmented polymer composition containing a polymer processing aid facilitates production of shaped articles with low melt fracture.
Abstract:
A two-dimensional substantially quadrupole field is established and maintained to trap a selected group of ions. The field has a quadrupole harmonic with amplitude A2, and a higher order harmonic with an amplitude AN, AN being greater than 0.1%. The selected group of ions are trapped in the field. An oscillation frequency at a selected amplitude of excitation for the selected group of ions is determined. An excitation field at the selected amplitude of excitation is added to the two-dimensional substantially quadrupole field to deplete ions within a depletion peak having a low frequency side slightly above the oscillation frequency at the selected amplitude of excitation for the selected group of ions.
