Sample ions, each having a mass-to-charge ratio, are passed to a quadrupole at least one AC voltage is applied thereto to separate the ions by incrementally varying a frequency of the at least one AC voltage within a first range of frequencies and, for each of at least some of the incremental frequencies in the first range of frequencies, incrementally varying an amplitude of the at least one AC voltage within a range of amplitudes, wherein each incremental frequency and incremental amplitude pair of the at least one AC voltage creates a different band pass filter in the quadrupole through which produced ions having a different corresponding mass-to-charge ratio pass to a detector.

An ion spectrometer is provided, comprising: an ion source, arranged to generate ions continuously with a first range of mass to charge ratios; and an ion trap, arranged to receive ions from the ion source along an axis, and to eject ions with a second range of mass to charge ratios orthogonally to that axis, the second range of mass to charge ratios being narrower than the first range of mass to charge ratios. In some embodiments, ions generated by the ion source continuously flow into the ion trap. Additionally or alternatively, ion optics receive ions ejected from the ion trap and cool the ions without substantial fragmentation. An ion analyser receives ions ejected from the ion trap or ion optics and separates the ions in accordance with at least one characteristic of the ions.

The first beam deflector is configured to oscillate in a first direction at a first frequency and the second beam deflector configured to oscillate in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction at a second frequency. The deflector controller is configured to scan a scanned area within the trapping volume with the laser by controlling the oscillation of the first and second beam deflectors to cause ions trapped within the trapping volume to fragment into fragment ions. The scanned area has a first dimension defined by the oscillation in first direction and a second dimension defined by the oscillation in the second direction.

The method comprises causing ions to perform a plurality of cycles along or around an ion guiding path such that the ions separate according to said physicochemical property. The ions are ejected from an ion exit region by applying a force to the ions such that only having a physicochemical property value that is either above or below a threshold value are ejected as they pass through the exit region, but ions having a physicochemical property value either below or above said threshold value, respectively, remain within the ion guiding path. The force applied to the ions within the exit region is varied with time such that the physicochemical property value of the ions ejected from the ion guiding region varies with time.

A known separation profile of a precursor ion is fit to intensities from the at least one product ion in the plurality of multi-scan product ion spectra to reconstruct a separation profile of a precursor ion of the at least one product ion.
