A method of operating a memory controller controlling a nonvolatile memory device including a user area and a meta area is provided. The method includes selecting a source block among a plurality of memory blocks included in the user area, loading a mapping table stored in the meta area on the basis of a sub-bitmap of the selected source block, and generating a valid page layout constituted by valid pages among pages included in the source block on the basis of the loaded mapping table. The sub-bitmap includes information of a valid mapping table with respect to the selected source block.

An embedded multimedia card (eMMC) and a method of operating the same are provided. The eMMC includes a flash memory and a device controller configured to control the flash memory. The device controller includes a command storage unit configured to receive a command transmitted from a host regardless of a state of a data bus and to store task information by task ID; and a status storage unit configured to store status information based on task status by task ID.

The storage device may include: a nonvolatile memory device; and a controller configured to control a read operation of the nonvolatile memory device according to a read request from an external host device. The controller is configured to read map data including a segment, and to store different types of map data in an internal random access memory (RAM) based on determining whether the segment corresponds to sequential data.
