    摘要: The present invention relates to a system, device and method for two-way satellite communication using a dual channel communication configuration to make better use of limited bandwidth. The two channels include a dedicated Unicast channel for each remote VSAT terminal and a dedicated Multicast channel that is a shared resource for all the VSAT terminals in the network. Each VSAT terminal is provided with two separate tuners, one for Unicast information and one for Multicast information. The system thus provides Unicast information through the Unicast channel to the Unicast receiver in the VSAT terminal to individual destination VSAT terminals, and sends Multicast information to all VSAT terminals via the Unicast channel and the Unicast receivers in each VSAT terminal.

For this purpose, digital broadcast wave signals, which are received by four antennas, for example, disposed in rear quarter glasses and so tuned as to have nondirectivity, are in-phase combined by two in-phase combining circuits. The in-phase combined signals are then diversity combined by a diversity combining circuit constituting a receiver. In this way, a high level of receiving characteristic of digital broadcast waves can be obtained.

Such messages are referred to as “electronic car-mail” or “C-mail” messages as each message has a destination or origination address which includes an identifier, e.g., a vehicle identification number (VIN), identifying the automobile. The messages may be delivered to the automobile from a remote server through a communications network, e.g., the Internet. One such message may contain a recall notice to the automobile. Another message may contain just-in-time map information for navigation, depending on the current location of the automobile. Yet another message may contain advertising information concerning selected entities, e.g., restaurants, gas stations, department stores, etc., also depending on the current location of the automobile. The messages transmitted from the automobile to the remote server may contain, e.g., GPS information identifying the location of the automobile, dynamic data furnished by sensors in the automobile for analysis, an odometer reading and a speedometer reading for records, etc.

    摘要: A method for configuring voice and data communication over a voice channel of a wireless telecommunications network that includes an onboard vehicle communications system, a cell tower, a base station, a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and a remote call center. Initially, a component on the network side, such as a network vocoder incorporated within a base station, selects a data rate during configuration of the voice channel. Thereafter, an onboard vocoder incorporated within a chipset of the onboard vehicle communications system sends a service option control message to the network vocoder requesting a higher data rate for the subsequent voice and data transmissions. A similar process occurs during a handoff that involves a change of network vocoders.
