A strength of an electric field generated by applying a voltage to the electrodes is controlled to be variable by means of various techniques. An apparatus for electrochemical purification of water and for regulation of acid-alkaline properties, Red-Ox characteristics and catalytic activity of water that can be used for obtaining washing and disinfecting solutions. The apparatus includes at least one electrochemical cell which contain vertical coaxial cylindrical and rod electrodes made from material nonsoluble during electrolysis and an ultrafiltration ceramic diaphragm installed in the bushings between the electrodes to create inter-electrode space in the electrode chambers. The lower and upper bushings have a channels for the treated solution supply into and discharge from the electrode chambers. The channels are connected to the feeding and discharging adjustment lines. There is also a metering pump on the water line for sodium chloride dosing into the water to be treated. The water line contains a flow regulator connected to the feeding and discharging adjustment lines. Poles of the power supply are connected to the electrodes. The feeding line is connected to the inlet of the negative electrode chamber and the output of the negative electrode chamber is connected to the inlet of the positive electrode chamber by a special line which has an adjustment for discharging a part of the degasified treated solution from the chamber of the negative electrode. A catalyst chamber can be installed on the special line. The catalyst chamber contains a mixture of particles of carbon and manganese dioxide. A separator with a tangential inlet is used for discharging a part of the degasified processed solution.

The object of the invention is to accomplish surface treatment such as cleaning, etching or after-treatment of parts or semi-processed articles for the manufacture of industrial or medical products without raising the problem of environmental pollution and without damaging or contaminating the treated articles. Water is electrolyzed in a tank which is partitioned by a porous membrane into an anode chamber and a cathode chamber to prepare a fresh anodic water containing H.sup.+ ion in the anode chamber and a fresh cathodic water containing OH.sup.- ion in the cathode chamber. The fresh anodic water and the fresh cathodic water are separately discharged from the electrolysis tank, and selected one of the anodic water and the cathodic water is brought into contact with the object of wet treatment. The efficiency of electrolysis of water can be enhanced by adding a small amount of an electrolysis aid such as carbon dioxide gas or ammonium acetate to water and/or by irradiating water under electrolysis with an electromagnetic wave having an wavelength not longer than 400 nm or not shorter than 3000 nm.

An electrolytic cell for generating a mixed oxidant that is rich in ozone is disclosed. The cell disassociates a brine solution to generate ozone and chlorine based oxidants. The improved cell design allows the ratio of ozone to the other oxidants to be optimized, thereby providing a more efficient sterilization solution. The ozone production is adjusted by adjusting the residence time of the brine solution in the cell and the orientation of the cell.

An electrolytic pool chlorinator for chlorinating a swimming pool includes a water distribution chamber which automatically distributes fresh pool water to a brine tank, to a cathode chamber, and to a packed column in which liberated chlorine gas is intermixed with pool water before being returned to the pool. The water distribution chamber includes a first compartment for continuously receiving pool water and having a hole therein for distributing water to the brine tank. A second compartment contiguous with the first compartment of the water distribution chamber receives pool water which spills over from the first compartment. A conduit conveys water from the second compartment to the cathode chamber for continuously diluting the concentration of sodium hydroxide therein. The conduit delivers pool water to the cathode chamber at a controlled rate and at a point relatively remote from the cathode to prevent calcium deposit formations upon the cathode. An overflow conduit communicating with the cathode chamber continuously flushes excess concentrations of sodium hydroxide and maintains the proper level of catholyte. A replaceable ion-permeable membrane assembly is secured over the open end of the cathode chamber tube by a circular nut to permit convenient replacement of the membrane. Pool water received by the chlorinator is used to cool the electrical power supply components of the chlorinator, and a safety thermostatic switch deactivates the chlorinator if the flow of pool water is interrupted.
