Feed liquid carrying solids is introduced at 46, Fig. 2, to a feed-distributing conduit 32 surrounding, at a location below the normal liquid level, a feed-well 25, which extends above and below the liquid level in a circular settling tank (not shown) incorporating rotary scrapers mounted on a shaft 17. Part of the stream is split off from the main stream at each of the overhangs O 1 to O 5 , Fig. 6, (which shows the conduit developed), each part being diverted by one of a number of curved members S 1 to S 5 through one of a number of openings 26 to 30 in the feed-well wall and thence through a mouth portion 33 having a vertically-adjustable cover plate 34. The remainder of the stream flows in similarly at 31. In Fig. 10 the feeddistributing conduit 49 comprises two channels 50, 51, each completely surrounding the feedwell 52 and each open throughout its length to the feed-wall interior. The main feed conduit 53 discharges into two branches 54, 55 communicating tangentially with channels 50, 51 respectively but on opposite sides of the feed-well so that the directions of liquid flow in the two channels are opposite. The channels are separated by a partition 56 whose inner margin lies outside the feed-well boundary. The purpose of the method is to rapidly disperse the influent energy of the feed and promote quiescence in the feed well.

A multitray clarifier comprises a cylindrical tank 10 which is divided by trays 12, 16, 18, 22 into a feed compartment 29 and at least one subjacent set of superposed settling compartments. The embodiment shows two such sets where the upper compartments 15 and 21 of each set form clarification compartments and the lower compartments 17, 23 form clarification and thickening compartments, each set being hydraulically sealed from the other. The mixture to be clarified is fed tangentially to the feed compartment 29 and passes through ports 47, 49 of a rotatable shaft 40 to feed wells 19, 25 formed by cylinders 20, 26 extending from the trays 16, 22. The shafts 40 is divided by a partition plate 42 to provide separate feeds to each feed well and scrapers 63 in the feed compartment 29 ensure an equal feed of solids which readily settle in this compartment. Clarified liquid overflows through outlets 92, 94, 96, 98 at the top of each compartment to a tank 100, the outlets being adjustable in height to regulate the overflow and thus control the feed to each set. Scrapers such as 67 are provided in each compartment to impel settled solids from the upper compartment of each set to the lower compartment and the solids in the lower compartments to the centre where they are drawn off through pipes 78, 82 by a mud pump 84. The scum in the feed compartment is also removed by the pump 84 through a conduit 36. Means are provided to vent the apparatus to atmosphere in filling the tank prior to operation.

Gravity - separation apparatus; plant.-A settling-tank in which settled sludge is moved towards the centre by rotating scrapers is provided at the centre with a separate chamber which serves as a sludgedecomposition chamber or for housing auxiliary parts of the plant. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the liquid supply pipe 1 passes underneath the settling-tank 9 and rises in the central chamber 3. 'Branch pipes 4 connect the pipe 1 with a circular distributing trough 5. Some separation takes place in an inner compartment formed by a partition 7, light matter rising and being pushed up an inclined flange 11 into a trough 12 and a vessel 13, which serves as an oil separator. Heavier matter settles into a trough 10, which also receives sludge swept to the centre by scrapers 21. The matter in the trough 10 is removed through pipes 16 by a pump 16 in the central chamber 3. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, a sludge-decomposition chamber 17, situated around and beneath the chamber 3, communicates with the tank 9 through a, circular opening 19. A pump 16 removes the sludge through a pipe 31. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, sludge is pumped from collecting pockets 22 into a central chamber 3 where it is agitated periodically by mixing pumps 23. The inlet pipe 1 is provided with valves 6 arranged in inspection pits at the periphery and toward the centre of the tank. The scrapers 21 in each of the modifications are supended individually or in groups from a carrier 28 by means of hinged arms 29, Fig. 5, so that they are automatically accommodated to unevenness of the floor. The carrier 28 may move on rails placed on the periphery of the settling- tank and on the central chamber 3. Or the carrier 28 may be supported on floats 24, Figs. 3 and 4, and moved round by means of a driven rope 25 to which it is clamped or by means of a stationary rope 25 engaged by an electrically-driven winch on the carrier.
