摘要: A method of making an artistic picture or design with strands of yarn. A flat yieldable substrate has the outline of various elements of a picture or design on a painted background and which may have the colored yarn to be used indicated within each outlined portion. The steps of the method includes cutting a length of yarn of the selected color, doubling the yarn, and piercing the doubled end with a straight pin which is pushed into the substrate at a selected point on design. In one technique, the doubled yarn is loosely twisted and a pin inserted through the two strands about one inch from the point of beginning. The length between the pins is formed into an upstanding loop by pushing the pin into the substrate immediately adjacent the first pin. This process is repeated until the entire area is covered with upstanding loops of yarn thereby forming an interesting texture over the area. The remainder of the areas are then similarly covered with appropriate colors of yarn. In some instances, a second layer may be placed over the first layer using the same or contrasting colored yarn in which a length of the selected color is doubled and pinned to one border of an area. The doubled strands are maintained parallel and pinned to the opposite border creating a straight, doubled strand of yarn across the first layer. This process is continued with parallel doubled strands until the entire area is covered with a second layer. The straight strands give a simulated brush stroke effect. Interesting effects can be achieved by pulling a contrasting lower layer of loops through a second layer; by pinning short pieces of yarn through the first layer and to the substrate and brushing to form a fuzzy effect; by trimming brushed yarn to produce a fur-like effect; and by bordering covered areas with twisted strands of yarn.

摘要: A release film is coated with a thin layer of metal by, for example, a vapor deposition process. The film is then stretched over a composite object, made, e.g., of fiberglass-epoxy or graphite-epoxy, which one desires to metallize. A treatment involving either vacuum or pressure and that may involve heat is used to transfer the thin metal layer to the composite object. The stretchable film is then peeled off the object, leaving a metal coating bonded to the object. The epoxy resin or other adhesive in the composite material gives structural integrity to the object as well as provides a bond for the metal, so that the composite object may be molded and metallized in one step. Alternatively, a two-step process of molding then metallizing or metallizing then molding can be employed.

摘要: The mechanism comprises a pressure sensitive label dispenser for delivering successively pressure sensitive labels from a backing sheet to a label applying station. At the applying station is a mouthpiece having one longitudinal side edge arranged to be transversely disposed across the path of feed of the backing strip and having a lower perforated label carrying surface of less width than the label to be carried thereby. Mounted on the other longitudinal side edge of the mouthpiece is an applying roll. The mouthpiece forms a part of a unit which is fastened to the label dispenser so that a label discharged therefrom moves across the label carrying surface and comes to rest with its advancing edge portion positioned beneath the applying roll. A tubular shaft which also communicates with the mouthpiece to provide suction at its label carrying surface supports the mouthpiece for pivotal movement about its one longitudinal side edge. The shaft has affixed thereto a straight lever, to one arm of which, is connected a solenoid which is energized by electronic means actuated by register marks on a rapidly moving web or by objects carried by a rapidly moving conveyor to pivot the mouthpiece down to cause the applying roll to press the advancing edge portion of the label into adhered relation on an article area moving rapidly beneath the applying station. Means are connected to the other arm of the straight lever to restore the mouthpiece to its label securing position as soon as the label has been applied to the rapidly moving label area. Means are provided to stop the advancement of the backing sheet each time a label is delivered to the applying station. The electronic means for actuating the mouthpiece and its applying roll to apply a label to an article area also restarts the advancement of the backing label so that a succeeding label is fed to the mouthpiece as the previously held label is being stripped therefrom. The unit comprising the mouthpiece, the applying roller, means for pivoting the same to apply a label and means for restoring the mouthpiece for normal label receiving position can be installed in any high speed pressure sensitive label dispenser that can maintain accurate step-by-step movement. Such a dispenser however would need to be modified to practice the purposes of this invention.

摘要: Apparatus is provided for applying a bead of gasket-forming material to a mateable surface of a workpiece. The apparatus includes a source of gasket-forming material and a screen having a predetermined pattern conforming to the desired bead of the gasket-forming material. A spreader applies the gasket-forming material to one side of the screen and the gasket pattern is then formed on an adjacent transfer surface of a transfer pad on the opposite side of the screen. Means are provided for moving the pad with the pattern on the transfer surface and engaging it with the mateable surface of a workpiece mounted on a support spaced from the screen, thereby forming a bead of gasket-forming material on the mateable surface. The transfer surface is moved through an arc of 180.degree. when moving between the screen and the workpiece surface.

摘要: A composite material for forming graphics such as letters or numbers. The composite material includes a layer of latent adhesive material, a mono-layer of granules lightly adhered to a donor web, and a thin layer of bonding material between and in face-to-face contact with the layers of granules and adhesive. The layer of bonding material maintains the adhesive and granular layers in close proximity and excludes air from therebetween. When the composite material is selectively heated in graphic patterns, corresponding portions of the bonding layer melt; and corresponding portions of the adhesive material and granular layer soften, absorb the melted portions of the bonding layer and adhere together. Upon subsequent separation of the layer of adhesive and the donor web the remaining portions of the layer of bonding material separate, whereas granules transfer to the accepting tape in the heated areas to provide the graphics.

摘要: Retroreflective sheeting having improved resistance to delamination is prepared by imparting a grid pattern to a monolayer of glass spheres having a light reflecting layer thereon, applying a sphere binder layer over the grid pattern imposed on the monolayer of glass spheres so as to adhere to the reflective layer on the monolayer of glass spheres, and pressure consolidating the resulting composite against a clear, protective overlay film, wherein the overlay film bonds to the sphere binder layer in the grooves formed by the grid pattern.
