    摘要: A mass spectrometer is disclosed wherein a z-lens upstream of an orthogonal acceleration Time of Flight mass analyser is repeatedly switched between a first mode wherein ions are transmitted to the mass analyser for subsequent mass analysis with a relatively high transmission and a second mode wherein ions are transmitted with a relatively low transmission. If it is determined that mass spectral data obtained when the mass analyser is in the first mode is suffering from saturation, then suitably scaled mass spectral data obtained when the mass analyser is in the second mode is used instead. If the saturation is severe then the mass spectral data obtained in the first mode may be replaced in its entirety with mass spectral data obtained in the second mode.

    摘要: Provided is a method for preparing a sample surface for analysis that involves placing a sample surface in droplet-receiving relationship to a reservoir containing an analysis-enhancing fluid. Typically, the analysis-enhancing fluid is comprised of a mass spectrometry matrix material and a carrier fluid, and the carrier fluid is comprised of a low volatility solvent. A droplet of the analysis-enhancing fluid from the reservoir such that the droplet is deposited on the sample surface at a designated site. Such ejection is typically, but not necessarily carried out through the application of focused acoustic energy. Then, the sample is subjected to conditions sufficient to allow the analysis-enhancing fluid to interact with the sample surface to render the sample surface suitable for analysis. Optionally, the sample is analyzed at the selected site. Also provided are systems and devices for preparing a sample surface for analysis.

    摘要: A spectroscopic analyser and method of use, for surface analysis spectroscopy, are disclosed. The spectroscopic analyser 10 has a time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometer which analyses secondary electrons emitted from a surface of a sample 30 on excitation by an irradiation source 40. The TOF spectrometer includes a gate 50, which receives and selectively passes a proportion of the secondary electrons by pulsed deflection or retardation of the electron beam using gating members 55. In that manner one or more pulses of electrons enter a magnetic field-free flight tube 90 and reach a detector 120 downstream of the gate 50. The flight times, and therefore energies, of the detected electrons through the flight tube 90 are thereby detected. A curved electron mirror 100 may be used to increase the flight path of the pulsed electrons in the flight tube 90, thereby increasing the spread of each electron pulse within the analyser 10.

    摘要: A microfabricated silicon chip with a separation material, such as in situ prepared porous polymer monoliths in its microchannels is disclosed. The polymer monoliths are liquid-permeable and serve as microcolumns for liquid chromatography, which are prepared by in situ radical polymerization of a mixture containing vinyl monomers and solvents (porogen) in the microchannels. A method and system are disclosed to generate one or more electrospray plumes from one or more nozzles that provide an ion intensity as measured by a mass spectrometer that is approximately proportional to the number of electrospray plumes formed for analyses contained within the fluid. A plurality of electrospray devices can be used in the form of an array of miniaturized separate electrospray devices for the purpose of generating multiple electrospray plumes from multiple nozzles for the same fluid for analysis. This invention dramatically increases the sensitivity of microchip electrospray devices compared to prior disclosed systems and methods. The silicon chip having the packed microchannels disclosed herein finds application in coupling with mass spectrometry for sample analysis. Also disclosed is a separation block having multiple through-substrate channels filled with a separation material such as polymer monolith which can be stacked in multiple blocks for sequential two-dimensional chromatographic separation and integrated with the electrospray device.

    摘要: The presence of trace molecules in air may be determined using an ion mobility spectrometer. Such devices may be used in the fields of explosives detection, identification of narcotics, and in applications characterized by the presence of very low airborne concentrations of organic molecules of special interest. The sensitivity of such instruments is dependent on the method of gas sampling utilized. A cyclone sampling nozzle can greatly improve the sampling efficiency, particularly when the sampling needs to be performed at a distance from the air intake. The cyclone sampling nozzle consists of an intake gas flow and a separate coaxial emitted gas flow which is deflected to move with a circular motion.

    摘要: A mass spectrometer is disclosed comprising a mass selective ion trap such as a 3D quadrupole field ion trap upstream of a pusher electrode of an orthogonal acceleration Time of Flight mass analyser. According to a first embodiment bunches of ions are released from the ion trap and the pusher electrode is energised after a delay time which is progressively varied. According to a second embodiment ions are released from the ion trap in reverse order of mass to charge ratio with the ions having the largest mass to charge ratio being released first. By appropriate release of the ions from the ion trap it is possible to ensure that substantially all of the ions arrive at the pusher electrode at substantially the same time. According to both embodiments it is possible to achieve a duty cycle approaching 100% across a large range of mass to charge ratios.
