Abstract: Positioning of a UE is supported in a Radio Resource Control (RRC) Inactive state. The UE receives a request for periodic or triggered location and enters the RRC Inactive state. When an event is detected, the UE sends an RRC Resume Request to a gNB that includes an indication of the event. The indication may be an event report that may include downlink positioning measurements. The gNB forwards the event report to a location server, and may later receive and return an event report acknowledgement to the UE in an RRC Release. The indication may instead trigger uplink positioning, with the base station sending an uplink Sounding Reference Signal (SRS) configuration to the UE in an RRC Release, causing the UE to transmit uplink SRS signals to be measured by gNBs. For uplink related position methods like RTT, the gNB can receive both types of indication.

Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure relate to methods and apparatus for on-demand positioning. For example a method may include transmitting a request to participate in a UE positioning procedure, wherein the request indicates one or more parameters to be used by a location server in coordinating one or more base stations (BSs) to participate in the UE positioning procedure, and receiving signaling from the location server configuring the UE to participate in the UE positioning procedure.

Abstract: An entity, such as a mobile device or base station, measures downlink position referencing signals (PRS) occasions or uplink position sounding referencing signal occasions for supporting estimating the position of the mobile device. The entity, for example, performs a plurality of positioning measurements from a plurality of consecutive PRS occasions received in a bundle from one or more base stations or from a mobile device. Each PRS occasion may include one or more slots and may be narrowband or non-narrowband. The bundled, e.g., consecutive, PRS occasions may be transmitted with a periodicity that is sufficient to maintain a desired throughput. Moreover, with the use of bundled PRS occasions, power consumption of the mobile device, as well as effects of clock drift and mobile device movement, may be minimized.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. The described techniques relate to improved methods, systems, devices, and apparatuses that support aperiodic and cross component carrier positioning reference signals (PRSs). Generally, the described techniques provide for receiving a dynamic trigger indicating that a user equipment (UE) is to monitor for one or more downlink PRSs. The UE may generate a timing measurement for the downlink PRSs, and may transmit a measurement report that indicates the timing measurement to a transmission/reception point. A UE may also transmit a capability indicator, indicating that the UE is capable of maintaining phase coherence for a PRS that spans multiple component carriers, receive control signaling that indicates multiple component carries on which the PRS is phase coherent, generate a timing measurement for the PRS based on the control signaling, and transmit a measurement report that indicates the timing measurement to the transmission/reception point.

Abstract: This disclosure provides methods, devices, and systems for beam group reporting for positioning in new radio (NR) wireless communications systems. In some wireless communications systems, multiple PRS resources, e.g., a beam group, received by a user equipment (UE) from the same network entity may be used to produce a combined Time of Arrival (TOA) measurement for the reference or target to derive an Reference Signal Time Difference (RSTD) estimate. The UE provides to a network entity an indication of the PRS resources in the beam group, which may be specifically or generally identified. Additionally, parameters associated with the beam group are provided, such as a relative quality of the TOA measurement for each PRS resource in the subset, a spread of the TOA measurements in the subset, a relative signal strength of each PRS resource in the subset, or a spread of the signal strength in the subset.

Abstract: This disclosure provides methods, devices, and systems for multi-level configuration and reporting for positioning in new radio (NR) wireless communications systems. In some wireless communications systems, a network entity may determine a position or location of a supported user equipment (UE) using radio access network information. The information may be associated with UE-assisted positioning techniques, such as a positioning reference signal (PRS) transmission by the base station and reporting of radio signaling measurements by the UE. The UE may support a multi-level configuration for reporting the radio signaling measurements, including determined report quantities on one or more of a resource level, a set level, or a setting level for the PRS transmission, or generally for the network entity. The described techniques may improve robustness associated with the reporting and, in some examples, reduce signaling overhead associated with determining a positioning and location of the UE.

Abstract: Disclosed are techniques for wireless communication. In an aspect, a user equipment (UE) receives assistance data for enabling the UE to estimate a location of the UE, the assistance data including a relative location of each of a plurality of transmission points, wherein the relative location is represented as a hierarchy of two or more levels of description, wherein a highest level of description is relative to a fixed reference point, receives, from each of at least a subset of the plurality of transmission points, at least one positioning reference signal, and estimates the location of the UE based on characteristics of reception of the at least one positioning reference signal from each of the subset of the plurality of transmission points and the two or more levels of description and the fixed reference point for each of the subset of the plurality of transmission points.

Abstract: A mobile device supports positioning with positioning reference signals (PRS) on multiple beam by dividing the PRS processing into two separate modes, an acquisition mode and a tracking mode. In acquisition mode, the mobile device performs a fast scan of all of the beams from a base station transmitting PRS using less than the full set of resources for the PRS, i.e., less than the full bandwidth and/or less than the full number of repetitions of the PRS. The mobile device may select the best beams to use for positioning, e.g., based on signal strength metric. In tracking mode, the mobile device tracks the PRS from only the selected beams using the full set of resources for the PRS. The mobile device may return to acquisition mode after a predetermined number of positioning occasions or if the selected beams are no longer valid due to movement or change in conditions.

Abstract: Disclosed are techniques for wireless communication. In an aspect, a user equipment (UE) receives, from a location server, a positioning reference signal (PRS) configuration for a downlink-and-uplink-based positioning session between the UE and the location server, waits, based on a determination that a sounding reference signal (SRS) configuration for the downlink-and-uplink-based positioning session has not been received from a serving base station of the UE, for reception of the SRS configuration from the serving base station until expiration of a timer, and determines, based on the expiration of the timer, whether the SRS configuration was received.

Abstract: Disclosed are techniques related to wireless communication system in which a network node (e.g., a base station, gNB, etc.) may be allowed to puncture a reference signal (RS) to deliver high priority data (e.g., URLLC data) to a user equipment (UE) that is not currently being served by the network node. The RS may comprise a puncturable subset and an unpuncturable subset. The puncturable subset may comprise resources of the RS that are allowed to be punctured, and the unpuncturable subset may comprise resources of the RS that are prohibited from being punctured. The network node may transmit the RS such that unpuncturable subset indicates whether or not the puncturable subset of the RS has or has not been punctured.
