Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described that provide for truncated identification indicators. A user equipment (UE) may receive control signaling indicating a truncating configuration for an identification indicator. The truncating configuration may indicate a set of bits within an initial identification indicator to remove to generate a truncated identification indicator. The UE may remove the indicated set of bits and transmit the truncated identification indicator to a base station. The base station may receive the truncated identification indicator and reconstruct the initial identification indicator according to the truncating configuration. The base station may reconstruct the initial identification indicator by adding the set of bits (e.g., removed by the UE to generate the truncated identification indicator) to the truncated identification indicator.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may determine a UE capability for available radio access technologies. The UE may determine which of the available radio access technologies are suitable for idle cell reselection (e.g., inter-radio access technology idle cell reselection, intra-radio access technology idle cell reselection) according to the UE capabilities, which may be related to a UE category or UE usage mode (e.g., voice centric mode, data centric mode) of the UE, etc. The UE may transmit a signal indicating the UE capabilities to a network entity (e.g., a serving cell). The network entity may receive the signaling and determine suitable radio access technologies for the idle cell reselection, and transmit a set of parameters in a message for the UE to use as part of the idle cell reselection.

Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure relate to methods and apparatus for updating a routing ID associated with a user equipment in a wireless network. An exemplary method generally includes receiving a downlink control plane message including updated configuration information for a Unified Data Management (UDM) entity in the network; determining whether a universal subscriber identification module (USIM) of the UE supports one or more parameters stored in the USIM to be updated; based on the determination, storing the received configuration information in at least one of: the USIM if the USIM supports the one or more parameters to be updated; or memory of the UE if the USIM does not support the one or more parameters to be updated; generating an identifier for the UE based on the stored updated configuration information; and transmitting at least one message using the generated identifier.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to mechanisms for interworking between legacy and next generation radio access technologies (RATs) in a communication network. In some examples, a handover from a next generation access network to a legacy access network may be performed via a next generation core network and a legacy core network. A handover request received at a next generation core network serving node may include an identifier of a target cell within the legacy access network. The next generation core network serving node may identify a legacy core network serving node to which the handover may be forwarded based on the target cell identifier. Packet data units may then be routed over the legacy access network and the next generation core network by mapping data flows in the next generation core network to packet data connections in the legacy access network.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure relate to a mechanism to enable interworking between fifth generation system (5GS) network slicing and evolved packet core (EPC) connectivity. In an example, techniques are provided for existing packet data unit (PDU) sessions that provide connectivity to a network slice from a set of network slices. Connectivity to the network slice is in response to a user equipment (UE), that uses network slices, moving between a 5G network and a 4G network. The existing PDU sessions are connected to a dedicated EPC core network that supports the same services provided by the network slice.

A user equipment (UE) may receive the list of networks and, based at least in part on the type(s) of core network accessible via each PLMN and a capability of the UE, initiate a connection establishment with a PLMN and associated core network. In some cases, UEs that are not capable of connections with a first type of core network (e.g., a 5G core network) may be restricted from camping on a cell or PLMN that may provide only connections with the first type of core network (e.g., a 4G core network).

Abstract: Techniques are discussed herein for supporting periodic or triggered location of a user equipment (UE) using control plane (CP) optimization with optional use of Early Data Transmission (EDT). A location server (LS), such as a 5G LMF, sends a request to a UE for periodic or triggered location and includes a request and/or criteria for using CP optimization. After confirming the request, the UE monitors for periodic or triggering events and, for each detected event, sends an event report to the LS which may include location information. In embodiments, the UE establishes a signaling association with a RAN node to send the event report using CP optimization and optionally using EDT. The RAN node may then release the signaling association after the LS returns a single response to the UE.

In some aspects, the UE establishes a connection to a network and obtains a control plane message from the network. The control plane message may include one or more types of policy information if a size of the one or more types of policy information is less than or equal to a maximum payload size of the control plane message, or information indicating at least a network location from where the one or more types of policy information may be obtained by the UE over a user plane if the size of the one or more types of policy information is greater than the maximum payload size of the control plane message, or a combination thereof.
