A multi-color web-fed rotary printing press is arranged having a plurality of printing groups with each group having several individual printing units. Each printing group has an upright drive shaft that is connected to a drive motor for each of the several printing units in the group. The several upright drive shafts are connected to a longitudinal main drive shaft. The individual drive motors and the upright shafts are sized to be able to take over the drive of one of the printing units in a printing group should its motor fail.

A system and a method for producing displays such as signs and cards includes a substrate of material which is transferred from a supply roller to a first receiving unit. During the transfer, the substrate passes a series of color printing stations which applies a four-color image to the substrate, an opaque printing station which applies a layer of opaque ink to selected portions of the four-color image, a thick printing station which applies a pattern of viscous translucent ink to form extraordinarily thick ridges of translucent ink on the substrate. Finally, a metalized substance is applied to the substrate over the various ink layers using vapor metalization. As provided herein, the metalized substance is applied to the substrate during transfer of the substrate from the first receiving unit to a second receiving unit.

A drive device for reciprocating and rotating a roller such as a dipping roller in a dampening unit in a printing press is disclosed. The drive device includes a first driven unit and a second driven unit. The first driven unit reciprocates the driven roller along its axis whereas the second driven unit rotates the driven roller about that same axis. A coupling is provided in either the first or the second driven unit, or both, to permit the selective deactivation of one or more of the driven units to permit the drive to either rotate the roller without reciprocation, to reciprocate the roller without rotation, or to simultaneously rotate and reciprocate the roller.

A device for unloading metallized belts comprises a pair of parallel arms rotatably mounted respectively between each of two lateral side walls of the last station of the machine. The arms are connected to one another by crossbeams, which may accept support levers for small-diameter bobbins. Each arm has a base plate for supporting the ends of the axles for the large-diameter bobbins. The device includes an arrangement for rotating the sub-frame formed by the arms from the operating position to an extended position, which has a portion of the arms extending out of the downstream end of the machine to enable exchanging bobbins.

A drawing roller drive for the conveyance of a web in a rotary printing press utilizes a differential gear to accomplish a very exact change in the speed of the drawing roller. A single drive shaft and a single power take-off shaft are aligned coaxially with respect to each other. The differential gear arrangement includes a ball race gear and a downstream tension shaft gear.

In a rotary printing press with at least one folder, which comprises at least one cutting cylinder and one folding jaw cylinder, each folder is driven, due to being equipped with at least one separate drive motor, mechanically independently at least from the printing units of the printing press, and can be installed and registered independently therefrom.
