A method for dynamically adjusting a waiting time of handwriting inputs is applied to an electronic equipment having a handwriting input device. When a waiting-for-input time after the handwriting input device receives a handwriting input exceeds a waiting time of the electronic equipment, the electronic equipment performs a handwriting recognition upon the handwriting input so as to display a candidate word list. The method includes the following steps: receiving the handwriting input; generating a writing speed according to the handwriting input; and setting the waiting time of the electronic equipment according to the writing speed.

A character recognizer recognizes a handwritten input character. A sequence of points in two dimensional space representative of a stroke trajectory forming the input character is gathered. An input Directed Acyclic Graph is built with nodes representative of singular points at the beginning, end, and along the trajectory of the input character and with edges between nodes representative of an edge trajectory formed by the sequence of points of the input character between the singular points. Each edge in the input graph is described based on the shape, orientation and pen lift of the edge trajectory that the edge represents. The input graph is evaluated against model graphs, which are also Directed Acyclic Graphs, for all possible characters to find a path through a model graph that produces a best path similarity score with a corresponding path through the input graph. The input character is identified as an answer character represented by the model graph producing the best path similarity score. Each model graph for a reference character has nodes representative of singular points at the beginning, end, and along the stroke trajectory of the reference character. Edges between nodes in the model graph are representative of an edge trajectory formed by the sequence of points of the reference character between the singular points. Further each edge of the model graph has an “i” vector, a “j” vector and a “k” vector, and the “i,j,k” vectors indicate similarity values associated with the edge trajectory of the reference character and typical shapes, shape rotation and pen lift, respectively.

The present invention discloses spatial tracking of writing for interpretation of writing motion using three-dimensional position sensors to identify signs, symbols, or glyphs made by a writing stylus in real time. The present invention discloses an elongated pointing device capable of measuring angular directions in a plane and true geometrical distance measurement by tracking radial distance along a ray such that true Cartesian positions in the plane are capable of being tracked. A two-dimensional true geometry tracker may be applied twice. A first time to span the X-Y plane and then again on an orthogonal axis ensuring span in a three-dimensional volume. The tracker may form spherical or cylindrical spatial coordinates and may transform coordinates to Cartesian font coordinates. The present invention also discloses a platform capable of mounting the device for spatial tracking of a stylus. A flat face of the platform may define a surface and volume where a receptacle may engage the stylus and may be actuated by a writer. Sensors on a boom permit two rotation axes to track the radial, polar, and altitude coordinates into three-dimensional (3-D) points and determine dynamic state variables associated with the stylus.

The invention in one embodiment provides a system and method for determining the position of an ultrasonic pen device, and for providing calculated position information to a computer system. The system of one embodiment comprises a first and second ultrasonic sensor that detect an ultrasonic signal emitted by an ultrasonic pen. The system further includes analog-to-digital converters to digitize the sensed ultrasonic signal and a processor to process the ultrasonic signal and determine the position of the ultrasonic pen. Some embodiments of the invention incorporate an algorithm that comprises calculating a first ultrasonic signal arrival time and calculating a second ultrasonic signal arrival time, and that further comprises using the first and second arrival times in calculating a final ultrasonic signal arrival time.

The image processing apparatus picks up characters, patterns, and the like written onto paper or the like with a pen, performs geometric transformation for picked-up images, and performs natural input character analysis and reading processing. Furthermore, by comparing images picked up in a time-series, noise elimination and manuscript position modifications become possible.

A handwriting inclination angle calculating section calculates the inclination angle of the pen shaft when writing. A coordinates conversion calculating section converts the coordinate system of the acceleration from the pen shaft coordinate system to the gravity coordinate system. A movement amount calculating section calculates the movement direction and the movement distance of the pen's tip end. Finally, a handwriting detecting section detects a state of handwriting or non-handwriting.
