A process for flame-retardant finishing of fiber materials, for example wovens, is described. A tetrakishydroxymethylphosphonium compound is applied to the fiber material. This is followed by a treatment first with ammonia and then with an oxidizing agent. The fiber material is also treated with an acidic aqueous solution in the course of the process. The fiber materials obtained have good flame-retardant properties and a low formaldehyde content.

Textiles are provided that include fibrous cellulosic materials having an α-cellulose content of less than about 93%, the fibrous materials being spun, woven, knitted, or entangled. The fibrous cellulosic materials can be irradiated with a dose of ionizing radiation that is sufficient to increase the molecular weight of the cellulosic materials without causing significant depolymerization of the cellulosic materials. Methods of treating textiles that include irradiating the textiles are also provided.

The invention specifically overcomes past difficulties involving compounding and injection molding of composite specimens with bast fiber reinforcements. The present invention is generally directed to a process for making fabrics containing cotton fibers more aesthetically pleasing and resistant to staining by anionic dyes by derivatising the cotton so that it exhibits a permanent anionic charge. By increasing the anionic charge of the fibers, the fibers become resistant to anionic coloring agents which may undesirably come into contact with the fibers and the fibers can absorb greater amounts of cationic softeners and biocides. Furthermore, the negative charges repel each other resulting in a fabric with greater loft and hydrophilicity. This results in greater smoothness, better hand, and more comfort. Besides being used to prevent the cross-staining of fabrics, the present invention can also be used to make carpet materials resistant to anionic staining agents.
